DC actor Adam Brody opens up about botching his Star-Lord audition for Guardians of the Galaxy. On the heels of the success of The Avengers, Marvel Studios’ next big risk was debuting the obscure superhero team. Spearheaded by director James Gunn, the Guardians of the Galaxy immediately became fan favorites, and it’s difficult to imagine anyone from the roster being played by someone else.

Had things turned out differently, however, Brody could have played Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy. The Shazam franchise actor tells Variety that he really wanted the role of Peter Quill, but also admits that Chris Pratt was perfect for the role. Read the related excerpt from his interview below:

“I wanted that one,” he says, adding that he agrees that Chris Pratt was a “better” fit. “He is bigger, stronger, but tonally, I really dug it.”

Why Pratt Is Perfect As Guardians of the Galaxy’s Star-Lord

It’s no secret that Gunn wasn’t initially sold on the idea of Pratt playing Star-Lord. As the leader of the original roster, there was additional pressure to choose the right actor for the part. Gunn and Marvel Studios went to great lengths to find the perfect performer for the job. John Krasinski, Joel Edgerton, Eddie Redmayne, and Glenn Howerton were all in the running to play Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy. Ultimately, Pratt ended up landing the gig, which propelled his career to greater heights.

Prior to becoming a big movie star, Pratt was mainly known as Andy Dwyer in Parks and Recreation. Joining the MCU meant he had to physically bulk up, but the actor’s comedic sense was integral to making a character like Star-Lord work. Peter Quill usually comes off as rude and self-centered, but the fact that he is also funny makes viewers instantly like him. In addition to that, Pratt’s chemistry with the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast cannot be understated. The ensemble’s dynamic is one of the primary reasons why the public quickly rooted for the team.

Almost a decade since he debuted as Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy, Pratt’s stint as the character doesn’t seem like it’s ending anytime soon. Despite Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 marking the end of an era for the cosmic heroes, Quill is already expected to return in a new MCU project. This further supports the idea that Gunn was right to cast him in the role.
