“Everything Is Intentional”: Ahsoka Star Reveals Lightsaber Fights That Are Far More Than Just Stunts-TGN

Summary

  • Lightsaber combat in Ahsoka will be more intense and emotionally charged, offering deeper insights into the characters’ states of mind.

  • Sabine Wren, an experienced warrior, will showcase deliberate and intentional fight moves that reflect her journey and growth as a person.

  • Sabine’s evolution as a warrior in Ahsoka serves as an important indicator of her personal development, making her fight scenes deserving of careful attention.

Ahsoka promises to bring more lightsaber combat than any previous Star Wars live-action series, with the fights serving as pathways into the emotional states of the characters. Ahsoka Tano herself is an experienced warrior, a veteran of the Clone Wars and survivor of duels against Darth Maul and Darth Vader. Less experienced is Sabine Wren, the stubborn Mandalorian rebel who took on training after Ezra Bridger left his lightsaber behind for her in Star Wars Rebels.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, actress Natasha Liu Bordizzo explained that the choreography for her fight scenes involved very deliberate moves.

“Sometimes you do stunts in projects, and it feels performative or more like it’s for the fun of the action, which is fine. But every action scene in our show is very, very parallel to the story. Every move is thought out, to where they would comment that a certain move did or didn’t feel like Sabine. Everything is intentional, and I hope that shows on screen.”

Many projects use action sequences as a means of entertaining an audience; the best stories use action to tell more about the characters. With lightsaber fights being a personal style of combat, each move and the weight behind a strike can convey the emotions of the individuals involved. For a character as expressive as Sabine, such calculated moves are critical.

Sabine’s Journey Will Be Reflected In Her Fighting

While Ahsoka Tano is the series lead, Sabine Wren seems posed to be the emotional anchor of Ahsoka. A younger, grief-driven warrior, Sabine brings a range that Ahsoka can’t at her wizened stage of life. The Ahsoka trailer left questions of Sabine’s potential Force sensitivity, explaining the master and apprentice dynamic between the two. Even if she isn’t, Sabine is as a capable a warrior as any, having already proven herself with the Darksaber in Rebels.

Promotional material depicts Sabine and the mysterious Ahsoka villain Shin Hati locking blades multiple times. Beyond an adversarial relationship, the students are likely to parallel each other’s journeys – something the lightsaber choreography is intentionally showing. Sabine’s evolution as a person can best be charted by her skills as a warrior, making her fights in Ahsoka worthy of heavy attention to detail.

Episodes 1 and 2 of Ahsoka release Wednesday, August 23 on Disney+.
