Summary

  • The new Star Wars TV spot suggests that Thrawn may not be the true villain in the upcoming Ahsoka show.

  • Ahsoka Tano is seen dueling with Baylan Skoll and a new Inquisitor in the TV spot, hinting at a different threat to the galaxy.

  • It is possible that Ahsoka’s reference to “something dark” coming to the galaxy implies a threat beyond Thrawn’s return, and Tano herself may not know what it is yet.

A new Star Wars TV spot for the upcoming Ahsoka show is hinting that Thrawn won’t be the show’s true villain. While the return of the brilliant Imperial tactician is significant, the true danger of Thrawn might not be happening in the Ahsoka series itself. Instead, it’s being teased that something else may pose a threat to the galaxy first.

As seen in a new Ahsoka TV spot promoting the show’s two-episode premiere, Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) is featured dueling both the dark Order 66 survivor Baylan Skoll and the mysterious new Inquisitor Marrok. While there isn’t much in the way of new footage compared to the previous two trailers and a shot of Thrawn himself is briefly included, a line from Ahsoka may tease a threat beyond the Grand Admiral and his return to the galaxy. The new TV spot can be viewed below:

It’s possible Ahsoka’s belief that “something dark” is coming to the galaxy may be pointing to some other threat beyond Thrawn’s return.

Is Grand Admiral Thrawn A Red Herring?

While there are other lines of dialogue in the previous Ahsoka trailers referencing Thrawn’s return as a potential “Heir to the Empire“, the Grand Admiral might not be who or what Ahsoka is talking about when she more ambiguously claims something dark is coming. It implies that Tano herself doesn’t yet know what it might be beyond a possible disturbance in the Force.

It’s already been suggested that Thrawn’s role in Ahsoka will be smaller than expected. After all, it would make sense if his return was set up in Ahsoka but saved for the culminating Mandalorian movie from Dave Filoni which is expected to serve as a big crossover for all of Star Wars’ current and upcoming New Republic Era shows. Combined with this new TV spot for Ahsoka, it’s looking more and more likely that Thrawn is a red herring villain while the real threat has yet to be revealed for the upcoming Star Wars show premiering August 23rd on Disney+.
