Barbie Box Office breaks records with biggest opening ever for non-superhero movie, sequel or remake -TGN

Resume

  • Barbie’s opening weekend has broken records, with an estimated gross of $155-160 million, making it the best opening weekend of 2023 to date.

  • The film has broken numerous records, including the highest opening for a film starring a female director and the largest opening for a film based on a toy.

  • With limited competition and the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike limiting publicity opportunities for other films, Barbie has a strong chance of joining the $1 billion club at the global box office.

Barbie broke records with its opening weekend gross. The film, which premiered on July 21, was directed by three-time Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig from a screenplay she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach. It stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the protagonist Barbie and protagonist Ken, respectively, although a host of other versions of Barbie and Ken are played by actors including Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa and Kingsley Ben-Adir.

According to Warner Bros., the Barbie opening weekend box office sits at $155 million domestically and $182 internationally for a total of $337 million worldwide. With this, Barbie deserves the title of best opening weekend of 2023, right The Super Mario Bros. movie‘s opening share price of $146.3 million domestically. Barbie also broke a host of records, including the highest opening weekend for a movie that isn’t a sequel, remake, or superhero movie.

Could Barbie join the $1 billion club?

There are numerous additional records that support the Barbie movie is broken. These include the biggest opening for a movie with a female director, the biggest for a movie based on toys, and the biggest for either Margot Robbie or Ryan Gosling. Combined with the Oppenheimer box office and the other films currently in theaters, this gross has also led to the fourth-biggest domestic box office weekend of all time, following the opening weekends of Avengers: Infinite War, Avengers: EndgameAnd Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The only question that remains is how far Barbie can leave after this weekend. So far, the outlook looks incredibly bright, especially considering that the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike (as actors fight for fair wages) has eliminated many publicity opportunities for upcoming films. Potential competition from Haunted house, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant MayhemAnd The Mega 2 will likely be greatly reduced as a result, leaving a lot of open runway for it Barbie to keep climbing.

Barbie could very well be entering the $1 billion club soon. So far, this year is the only film to cross that milestone at the global box office SuperMario. However, given that this film opened even higher than Mariocould this mean that his path to that number is already determined if his international numbers can keep up with his domestic gross.
