Warning! This article contains SPOILERS of Barbie.Barbie Director Greta Gerwig opposed cutting a key scene from the film. The new film depicts the utopian world of Barbie Land, which changes forever when a Barbie, played by Margot Robbie, faces renewed struggles and difficult questions, and travels to the real world. While experiencing the real world for the first time alongside the version of Ken played by Ryan Gosling, both Barbie and Ken have their fair share of funny moments. For Barbie, there are also some really profound moments.

According to Gerwig during an interview with Rolling stone, one of those profound real-world scenes almost got cut. The scene takes place at a bus stop with Barbie sitting on the same bench as an older woman and briefly talking to her. Despite being an emotional moment and some of the Barbie movie’s best quotes, Gerwig had to fight to keep the scene in. Read her comments below:

“I love that scene so much. And the older woman on the couch is the costume designer Ann Roth. She’s a legend. It’s a dead end in a way — it leads nowhere. And in early cuts, looking at the movie, it was suggested, ‘Well, you could cut it. And really, the story would just go on.’ And I said, ‘If I cut the scene, I don’t know what this movie is about.’ That’s how I saw it. To me, this is the heart of the movie. The way Margot plays that moment is so gentle and so casual. There are more outrageous elements in the movie where people say, “Oh, my God, I can’t believe Mattel made you do this,” or, “I can’t believe Warner Bros. made you do this.” But to me, the part that I can’t believe is still in the movie is this little dead end that leads nowhere – except it’s the heart of the movie.

Why this scene is the heart of the movie

This scene sums it up perfectly Barbie‘s themes. It is immediately noticeable by how quiet it is. Barbie and the other woman on the couch sit there for a while before dialogue ensues, with the two women just looking at each other. This momentary pause in dialogue and action adds emphasis when a smiling Barbie declares that Roth’s character is beautiful, which she replies with a smile and that she knows. Despite feeling like a fish out of water for most of her time in the real world, it’s a moment of genuine connection for Barbie.

The scene is the heart of the movie because it shows how real Barbie is and reminds her of what she’s fighting for. It proves that all of Barbie’s talk and her belief in empowering women is real. That beauty is not just about looks, but about the woman’s self-confidence and effortless self-love. These traits Barbie hopes to restore in herself when she travels to the real world, and which she needs to work on in order to remind the other Barbies after being brainwashed by the Kens and their unexpected villain following her return to Barbie Land.

Even with minimal dialogue or action, the scene manages to honor women, demonstrate the essence of Robbie’s Barbie, and serve as a reminder of the film’s commitment. Having Roth play the elderly woman adds another layer to the scene, and the character is played by a real-life legend and an Academy Award-winning costume designer. Roth’s invaluable contributions and the impeccable style she has brought to life for countless works of art fit perfectly into that scene and what it means as the heart of the Barbie movie.
