Barbie Box Office Beats Top Gun 2 & Super Mario Movie With 1 Major US Milestone-TGN

Summary

  • Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, has surpassed $400 million at the domestic box office in just 14 days, faster than the smash hits The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Top Gun: Maverick.

  • With its current trajectory, Barbie has the potential to become one of the top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time, surpassing the $1.52 billion earned by The Avengers.

  • While Barbie’s international grosses are comparable to Top Gun: Maverick, it may not reach the top 10 without a boost in foreign territories, but its future still looks promising.

Barbie has passed a major box office milestone even quicker than two smash hits of the past year and a half. The movie, which was directed by Greta Gerwig, stars Margot Robbie as the titular doll, who travels to the real world with Ken (Ryan Gosling) when an existential crisis ruins her perfect existence in Barbie Land. After premiering on July 21, Barbie scored the highest-grossing opening weekend of the year with $162 million.

Per Deadline, the Barbie box office has put another feather in its cap at the domestic box office just before the beginning of its third full weekend in theaters. On Thursday, just 14 days in, the movie crossed the $400 million mark to reach a domestic total of $406.4 million. This is even faster than the record-breaking hits The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Top Gun: Maverick, both of which took 18 days to pass that milestone.

Will Barbie Be Able To Blast Past Top Gun: Maverick’s Record-Breaking Total?

If Barbie can keep up its lead on those well-performing titles, it could very well become one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which premiered this April, has become the No. 15 highest-grossing movie worldwide with a total run of $1.351 billion. Top Gun: Maverick, which premiered in May 2022, did even better, landing at No. 12 with $1.495 billion.

Given its current trajectory, it’s possible that Barbie could even become one of the Top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time. In order to do so, it would have to outgross The Avengers‘ $1.52 billion, which it could be on track to do, by a hair. To compare, The Avengers had earned $402 million domestic on day 14, just slightly under Barbie‘s total.

However, at the time of writing, the international grosses for Barbie seem proportionally comparable to the Top Gun: Maverick box office. Both movies climbed up the charts thanks to huge domestic grosses that were matched but not significantly surpassed by international markets, unlike The Avengers, which performed significantly better overseas than domestic. Without a boost in foreign territories, it might not be possible for Gerwig’s movie to reach No. 10 or higher, though its future still looks rosy regardless.
