Brilliant Barbie/LEGO Movie Theory Gets Endorsement From Original Director-TGN

Summary

  • The Lego Movie director supports the theory that it shares a universe with Barbie, as both movies have similar themes and are produced by Warner Bros.

  • The theory is based on the shared cast member, Will Ferrell, who plays antagonistic characters with similar interests in both movies.

  • The success of The Lego Movie and its influence on Barbie’s development process suggest that more toy-based movies could be in the works.

The Lego Movie director Chris Miller takes to Twitter to support a popular Barbie theory. Barbie has set multiple box office records – having collected $795.7 million so far – and continues to dominate as one of the highest-grossing movies of 2023. With a premise focused on Barbie’s journey to self-discovery in the real world, the comedy reminiscences themes from 2014’s The Lego Movie, which was also based on popular toys. Given that both movies were produced by Warner Bros. and the similar concepts about toys, this led to theories that the films could have a shared universe. The Lego Movie director adds fuel to a popular theory connecting his film with Barbie.

Posting on Twitter, Miller posted pictures from the two movies and stated, “shared universe.” Check out Miller’s post below:

As the image in Miller’s post highlights, Barbie and The LEGO Movie share a cast member, and it is Will Ferrell. Miller’s post includes a side-by-side photo of Ferrell in both movies, where he can be seen wearing nearly identical suits in the two images.

Why The Barbie-LEGO Movie Universe Theory Would Make Sense

Miller is referencing a popular Barbie theory that Barbie and The LEGO Movie are part of the same universe. Fans have been generating this Barbie likelihood ever since the first trailer with Ferrell was released. In this trailer, Ferrell’s character was revealed to be the Mattel CEO, who is trying to get Barbie back in a box. Eagled-eyed viewers drew the comparison between this character and Ferrell’s Lego Movie role Lord Business, who also served as an antagonistic character with similar interests.

In many ways, Barbie and The Lego Movie sharing a universe would make sense. In both movies, Ferrell plays bosses described as a “real world enemy of toys.” In Barbie, Ferrell’s rendering of the Mattel CEO wants to keep Barbie as a toy and squash her real-world living dreams. In The Lego Movie universe, Lord Business (and The Man Upstairs) wants to destroy the Lego universe with a super glue substance called Kragle. These characters have similar personas and goals, and being connected through toy movies seems coincidental for it not to have some in-universe connection.

The Lego Movie has also been consistently referenced throughout Barbie’s development process. Screenwriter Diablo Cody, who worked on a nixed version of Barbie, even said that The Lego Movie’s success was cited when she tried to work on Barbie. Similarly, Mattel now has other toy-based movies plan and has for several years following the success of The Lego Movie films. With Barbie and The Lego Movie smashing successes with additional sequel potential, this may not be the last of Will Ferrell’s role as a toy villain, destroyer of plastic worlds and Barbie girls.
