Barbie has officially surpassed The Batman‘s lifetime gross at the box office after its second weekend, becoming Warner Bros.’ biggest film of the decade. Barbie stars Margot Robbie in the titular role of Barbie, who leaves Barbieland to try and find herself in the real world. The film has been a critical and commercial success, with praise going toward the film’s story and highlighting Ryan Gosling as Ken.

Now, Barbie has officially topped The Batman‘s lifetime gross after just two weekends, becoming Warner Bros.’ biggest movie of the decade. As of writing, Barbie has made $774 million globally, while The Batman made $766 million at the end of its theatrical run. Not only has the Barbie movie beaten The Batman‘s box office record, but it also has plenty of time to soar even higher.

Why Barbie Is Taking The Box Office By Storm

Barbie previously beat a 15-year-old studio record by having the best Monday performance for a Warner Bros. movie since Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. The film has also surpassed Oppenheimer and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One at the box office, becoming the biggest hit of the summer box office so far. Barbie can attribute its success to providing plenty of heart and laughs for audiences while referencing the history of Mattel’s famous doll brand.

Despite its box office success, though, Barbie has been the target of some criticism for its heavy feminist themes and for making fun of patriarchal ideas. This resulted in Barbie‘s Rotten Tomatoes review score plummeting to 74% due to review bombing. However, online arguments haven’t been able to quell Barbie‘s ongoing box office success, nor its critical acclaim for its comedy and the way it handles its feminist messages.

As of writing, Barbie is the third highest-grossing movie of 2023, sitting behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($844.8 million) and The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.35 billion). Given just how impressive Barbie‘s box office numbers have been, the movie might end up beating The Super Mario Bros. Movie as the highest-grossing film of 2023. With many weeks left in theaters, Barbie‘s recent record-breaking weekend could be just the start of its success.
