One of the Barbie The film’s most emotional moments are reimagined by a fan as a beautiful watercolor-inspired piece of art. Released in theaters on July 21, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film follows Margot Robbie’s stereotypical Barbie as she goes through an existential crisis and leaves the matriarchal utopia of Barbie Land in search of self-discovery in the real world (with Ryan Gosling’s Ken in tow). The film received great reviews and a record-breaking first weekend at the worldwide box office.

Now, shortly after the Barbie film’s massive opening weekend, one of the film’s most emotional moments was recreated by @izartzy_ on Instagram with beautiful watercolor-inspired art. Check out the fan art below:

Using an iPad Pro and the Procreate application, the artwork captures the moment when Barbie sits on a park bench and discovers the source of her existential crisis, causing a single tear to flow down her cheeks. In the description, the creator of the artwork writes: “Barbie was so amazing, so funny and emotional I cried but I loved it so much even though it gave me an existential crisis.”

The Barbie movie is surprisingly emotional

For a film based on the Mattel fashion doll that has historically been criticized for encouraging unrealistic standards of beauty, a fact the film even acknowledges, the Barbie film manages to be all about female empowerment, with many inspiring moments driving home this main theme. The Barbie film, however, avoids being overly didactic as it also endears its audience with several surprisingly emotional scenes.

An emotional moment, captured by the watercolor-inspired art above, is when a distraught Barbie discovers that the catalyst to her existential crisis is a teenage girl named Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt), later realizing it is actually her mother Gloria (America Ferrera). Another tearjerker moment comes during the Barbie movie ends when the titular puppet meets the ghost of Mattel founder Ruth Handler and decides she wants to become human (to the melancholic yet sweet sound of Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?”). Barbie film explores complex questions about existentialism, feminism and self-discovery.
