Apple TV Plus Cancels New Show Just 7 Weeks After Finale Drops-TGN

Summary

  • Apple TV+ cancels City on Fire just 7 weeks after its finale, despite the potential for further seasons.

  • This is not the first time Apple TV+ has swiftly canceled a freshman series.

  • The streaming service seems to prioritize shows with well-known stars.

City on Fire has been canceled by Apple TV+ just seven weeks after its finale aired. The series, which is adapted from the 2015 novel of the same name by Garth Risk Hallberg, stars Wyatt Oleff, Chase Sui Wonders, Jemima Kirke, Nico Tortorella, and John Cameron Mitchell. It follows the investigation of the 2003 death of Samantha Yeung (Wonders), which is revealed to be part of a web of secrets and lies that also involves a prominent real estate family and a string of recent fires.

Per Deadline, City on Fire will not be moving forward after season 1. Despite the fact that the season ended with the potential to continue on into further installments, Apple TV+ has canceled the series. This news comes exactly seven weeks after the season finale – now series finale – aired on June 16.

What TV Shows Are Working for Apple TV+?

City on Fire is the latest freshman series to be canceled by Apple TV+. However, it was given more consideration than Patricia Arquette’s High Desert, which was canceled this July, just 10 days after its season 1 finale. Other shows that were swiftly struck down by the platform include the Taylor Schilling drama Dear Edward, which was axed three-and-a-half weeks after its season 1 finale, and the thriller Shantaram, which was canceled one day before its finale even aired.

It seems that Apple TV+ isn’t interested in letting their series breathe and giving them time to potentially find an audience. However, not every series on the streaming service is canceled so swiftly. In fact, quite a few of their flagship series reflect a level of confidence on the streamer’s behalf that these freshman series have not garnered.

Shows that have made it to the three-season mark or beyond include Ted Lasso, Servant, For All Mankind, and Mythic Quest. The Morning Show season 3 is also coming soon to the platform. While it hasn’t been revealed exactly what led City on Fire to be canceled, it may be the lack of a marquee star like Ted Lasso‘s Jason Sudeikis or The Morning Show‘s Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, as Apple TV+ does seem to make a habit of cultivating well-regarded movie and TV talent with strong name recognition to anchor their series.
