Community creator Dan Harmon has detailed what he wants to change about the upcoming movie compared to the existing TV series. The sitcom focuses on a community college in a fictional Colorado town, inspired by Harmon’s own experiences attending a community college. The series ended in 2015, but there are plans for a movie, which is currently in development.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Harmon detailed that he wants to shoot the upcoming Community movie without having to change the script during production. This decision came about due to what he refers to as his “drama queen” ways during the production of the TV series, wanting to avoid making returning actors go through the same thing again after they’ve become more established. Check out what Harmon said below:

I don’t want these now-superstar people, like Emmy-winning Donald Glover, who are bothering to gather out of loyalty to this thing, to come back and once again be getting blue pages run down by an intern that totally contradict what they spent all night memorizing. I want to have a veneer of, ‘Here’s your reward.’ I don’t want them to go, like, ‘Oh, he’s learned nothing, he’s treating us like cattle again.’

The Hollywood Reporter also revealed the upcoming Community movie will see plenty of actors from the original series returning in their roles. This includes Joel McHale as Jeff, Gillian Jacobs as Britta, Danny Pudi as Abed, Yvette Nicole Brown as Shirley, Ken Jeong as Ben, and Donald Glover as Troy. The movie was initially pitched as a class reunion for Greendale Community College, the characters catching up with one another after years apart.

The Community series finale featured many characters imagining what their lives would be like following the end of their current year at Greendale. This included one final, black screen with text on it reading, “#andamovie,” at the time a joke about what the show’s next follow-up would be. But now, that sequel film is becoming a real project headed by Harmon and others who previously worked on the series.

Since the movie will be focusing on a class reunion, it will likely serve as a definitive bookend for the show and its characters. This also means seeing the Community characters older and in different positions in life than during the events of the show. The differences between the TV show and the movie will be further revealed as the sequel film enters production.
