Cruel Summer Season 2 Ending: What’s Next For Megan After Cliffhanger Explained By EP-TGN

The following article contains spoilers from Cruel Summer season 2, episode 10, “Endgame.”

Summary

  • The Cruel Summer season 2 finale reveals that Isabella is the one who killed Luke, not Brent.

  • Megan discovers this months later on a security camera and will likely ensure that Brent doesn’t remain wrongly imprisoned, according to executive producer Elle Triedman.

  • Cruel Summer should return for season 3, but it should prioritize balancing the story and character relationships rather than relying heavily on misleading clues.

Cruel Summer showrunner and executive producer Elle Triedman explains the actions Megan (Sadie Stanley) will take after that shocking season 2 finale. Season 2, episode 10, “Endgame,” answers who killed Luke (Griffin Gluck) in the final moments. Although Luke’s older brother Brent (Braeden De La Garza) initially believes he killed Luke after accidentally shoving him into the water, the malefactor was Isabella (Lexi Underwood), who suffocates Luke once he barely swims to safety. Megan sees the footage on a security camera months later, and by then, Isabella is already on a plane to Ibiza.

In an interview with TVLine, Triedman was asked what Megan might do now that she’s found out Isabella is Luke’s killer in Cruel Summer season 2. The showrunner says Megan would make sure Brent does not remain behind bars since he didn’t cause Luke’s death. Triedman also addresses whether Megan would seek to avenge Luke’s death. Read her full quote below:

Well, if I were Megan, I would certainly make sure it got to the sheriff and the authorities ASAP. I don’t think she’s going to let Brent spend his life in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. It was, effectively, an accident in terms of his part of it. And there’s always a question of, will she try to avenge his death with Isabella?

Should Cruel Summer Return For Season 3?

There is currently no news on whether Cruel Summer season 3 will happen. Even though season 2 had its moments, it still had a lukewarm reception compared to season 1, particularly given its frustrating viewer experience. So much of the show was devoted to misdirects and setting up potential suspects, but these elements came at the expense of building up the relationship between the characters and making audiences invest in the central dynamic between Megan and Isabella.

Another issue is that Cruel Summer season 2 never makes a strong case for its late 1990s setting. The fashion isn’t representative of the time period, and some of the spoken dialogue or the technology highlighted don’t faithfully manifest the decade’s socio-culture. The series instead relies on its heavy music cues to provide the bulk of nostalgia and carry weight for the 1990s feel.

Despite the mixed responses and mild season 2, Cruel Summer, one of Freeform’s recognizable titles, should still get a chance for a season 3 renewal. However, the teen drama would be well-served to drop the misleading clues and overreliance on the mystery. It should instead work its way back to the balance that made season 1 a relatively present surprise.
