Trevor Noah’s Daily Show Replacement Could Be A Prominent Former Contributor-TGN

Summary

  • Hasan Minhaj, former senior correspondent on The Daily Show, is being considered as a potential successor to Trevor Noah as the host.

  • Minhaj’s experience hosting his own satirical news series, Patriot Act, and his success in crafting his own hosting style make him a strong fit for the job.

  • Hosting The Daily Show would be a life-altering decision for Minhaj, giving him a significant career boost and drawing in a wave of curiosity to the long-running comedy program.

Trevor Noah’s successor on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show could be a prominent former contributor, according to a new report. Noah made his last appearance as The Daily Show‘s regular host on December 8, 2022. Following Noah’s departure it was announced the satirical news program would feature a lineup of weekly guest hosts. Some of the names that hosted included Wanda Sykes, Leslie Jones, Sarah Silverman, Kal Penn, John Leguizamo, Hasan Minhaj, and current contributors such as Roy Wood, Jr. and Jordan Klepper.

Although episodes of The Daily Show have since been impacted by the ongoing WGA strike for fair wages, Variety is reporting that Minhaj is being eyed as a leading candidate to succeed Noah as the Daily Show‘s host. Variety cites three people familiar with the matter. Representatives for Minhaj and The Daily Show declined to comment.

Minhaj Would Be A Great Daily Show Host

Minhaj is no stranger to The Daily Show. He served as a senior correspondent on the program from 2014 to 2018. During that time, Minhaj also debuted his first comedy special. Titled Homecoming King, and released on Netflix in May 2017, the special received positive reviews from critics and led to Minhaj winning his first Peabody Award.

What makes the comedian and actor a great fit for the job is that he has a lot of experience hosting his own satirical news series. Minhaj co-created Patriot Act with producer Prashanth Venkataramanujam, which ran for six seasons. It won two Emmys and a Peabody Award. Even though Netflix canceled Patriot Act in August 2020, the stint allowed Minhaj to consistently craft his own hosting style by responding to the headlines of the day but also leaning into the topics that interested him most.

Minhaj expressed openness to hosting The Daily Show in a May 2023 interview with Variety‘s Awards Circuit podcast but also elaborated on how it was a life-altering decision. The job helped to elevate the profile of Trevor Noah and before him, of course, Jon Stewart. It would be a big boost for Minhaj, as well. It’d also draw new interest to the long-running comedy program, drawing in an initial wave of curiosity.
