Doctor who star David Tennant has one very simple message for all the bigots out there: “Leave trans kids alone, you absolute freaks”.

While many celebrities claim to be an LGBTQ+ ally, Tennant does the job.

He has been for a few months now wore a rainbow pin badge in the colors of the non-binary flag during his TV appearances, in support of one of his children who is reportedly non-binary.

Then viral photos emerged showing him wearing a “you’re safe with me” badge over Pride in London weekend.

His alliance doesn’t just extend to pinning badges, though. Speak on the Reasons to be cheerful podcast last month, he shared a heartfelt Pride message, explaining that he’s committed to “taking that fight” for LGBTQ+ people every day.

“You know what makes me happy right now? It’s Pride month – the fact that Pride month (exists) and is thriving and is something that’s happening at a time when the world seems to be becoming worryingly intolerant and strangely backward in some corners,” he told podcast hosts, Labor MP Ed Miliband and radio presenter Geoff Lloyd.

“We can’t take our foot off the gas. We cannot expect to always move in the right direction towards acceptance. We all have to fight that battle every day.”

Now, in his latest epic statement of solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, and trans youth in particular, Tennant has shared a powerful message through his t-shirt.

Appearing at the press launch for the second series of his Amazon Prime fantasy comedy series Good omensTennant wore his now non-binary pin, next to a tank top that appeared to read “Leave trans kids alone, you absolute freaks.”

While Tennant wore the top under a buttoned-up blue blazer, some of the words were visible – and internet sleuths have now found the t-shirt onlineit was designed by Crooked.

The Litvinenko star’s latest move has become an absolute storm with queer folk on social media, who have been praising him for speaking out at a time when trans youth are taunted by right-wing politicians and media outlets.

In the UK, the Tory government has reportedly drawn up plans to ban trans children from school sports that align with their gender identity, while teachers may be forced to “out” trans and non-binary students to their parents.

One fan led with a very simple question: “How else does the man remain a legend?”

Another wrote: “Forever emotional about this. Simply because these days we are all so used to being terribly disappointed by people we admire and my favorite since I was 14 is here to do this.

A third gushed: “David Tennant taking a press day as an opportunity to wear his ‘pick up for trans kids and dunk on transphobes’ shirt is the most attractive thing a man has ever done.”

Yet another said: “I am literally crying. I am so happy to see David Tennant supporting the trans community.”

While a certain group of anti-trans commentators have climbed out of the Twitter trenches to slay Tennant, who is about to reprise his role as Gallifrey’s most famous son, it’s unlikely he’ll feel compelled to withdraw his support.

In a June 1 post to mark the start of Pride month, his wife and fellow actor Georgia Tennant – the daughter of another Doctor Who star, Peter Davison – shared an image of the progressive Pride flag, alongside the caption: “Got your back, always.”

Good omens season two, based on the novel by The Sandman creator Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett will return to Amazon Prime on July 28. Season one is available on iPlayer, while Tennant can see his Time Lord role again on BBC1 in November.
