RuPaul’s Drag Race winner and trailblazing trans icon Sasha Colby is “forging a path to equality,” with a little help from Vice President of the United States Kamala Harris.

She took the world of reality TV by storm in April, after starting the 15th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race crown and scepter in hand. A few months later, Sasha Colby appears to have entered her next big race: the 2024 race to enter the White House.

While the prospect of the former Miss Continental winner running for president is just a blissful dream right now, she’s at least rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in politics — and changing the world for LGBTQ+ people in the process.

To round off Pride month, Colby hosted a official Pride celebration in partnership with advocacy group GLAAD, and Kamala Harris, Joe Biden’s right-hand man and US Vice President.

It was a call to queer community leaders to unite and oppose the hundreds of anti-LGBTQ+ laws currently being proposed and passed in the US, most of which target the US trans population.

Colby, known for eloquently sharing her experience as a trans woman and breaking misconceptions about the community, spoke at the event.

Colby was joined by stars including AttitudeMichaela Jaé Rodriguez, Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose, and non-binary Tony Award changemaker Alex Newell, but there was one person Colby wanted to thank most: Kamala Harris herself.

A few days after the event, on Friday (July 7), on Instagram Colby shared a serious message for Harris and praised her for speaking out for LGBTQ+ people.

“Indescribably grateful for the incredible honor of speaking at VP Kamala Harris’ annual Pride Month celebration,” she wrote.

“A big thank you to Vice President Harris and GLAAD for providing this platform to amplify LGBTQ+ voices. Together we forge a path to equality, acceptance and love.”

Gracious and grateful as ever, Colby also took a moment to thank fashion designer and Project Runways winner Christian Siriano for creating her gorgeous navy blue suit, and celebrity makeup artist Preston Meneses for giving it an a-star beat.

In the comments, Sasha Colby’s Drag race family is excited about how far their fellow alumni have come in the few short months since she stormed the drag queen competition.

“Loves sister. So proud of you,” she wrote All stars 6 winner and Colby’s former roommate Kylie Sonique Love. Meanwhile, Kerri Colby, Sasha’s drag daughter, remarked, “Everything mama,” alongside lovelorn and teary-eyed emojis.

Other Drag race stars, including Season 13’s Rosé and Denali, and Season 14’s Deja Skye, commented on several strange terms of endearment, including “icon” and, of course, “mom.”

Other fans demanded that she officially enter the 2024 presidential race, writing: “MOTUS: Mother of the United States”.

While there’s sadly no word on whether Ms. Colby will run for president, offering some much-needed relief from the various anti-LGTBQ+ candidates currently in the running, Kamala Harris’s Pride event isn’t the first time her name has been launched into the world of politics.

Earlier this year, and under the leadership of Jill Tokuda, the Democratic representative for Hawaii’s second congressional district, the U.S. House of Representatives took a moment to congratulate Colby on her Drag race win.

“Today, transgender people are among the most respected members of the Hawaiian community,” Tokuda said.

“In the midst of ongoing attacks on our LGBTQ+ rights, which target transgender and drag queens in particular, her win is not only well deserved, it gives us all hope. Congratulations to Sasha Colby.”
