Emily Blunt Confirms Reading Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Script, Still Doubtful About Sequel-TGN

Summary

  • Emily Blunt reveals she has read a script for the sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, but doesn’t know if or when the sequel might happen.

  • Blunt expresses her enthusiasm for Edge of Tomorrow 2 and her desire to work with director Doug Liman and costar Tom Cruise again.

  • Despite Blunt’s enthusiasm, there doesn’t seem to be much progress on Edge of Tomorrow 2, and Cruise’s busy schedule may make it difficult for the film to get off the ground.

Edge of Tomorrow 2 has long struggled to come to fruition, and Emily Blunt now reveals that she’s read a script for the sequel. Released in 2014, Edge of Tomorrow stars Tom Cruise and Blunt as soldiers engaged in a battle against aliens for Earth’s survival, with the day repeating itself every time Cruise’s character dies. The movie, which is directed by Doug Liman, was a critical and commercial success, and talk of a potential sequel has been ongoing since as early as 2015.

Now, in a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Blunt addresses the status of Edge of Tomorrow 2, revealing that she has actually read a script for the project.

Despite this, however, the star doesn’t seem to think the movie will be happening anytime soon, joking that Cruise’s commitment to the Mission: Impossible franchise might be partly to blame. Check out Blunt’s full comment below when Horowitz asks whether she’s tired of being asked about an Edge of Tomorrow sequel:

“No, because I wish there could be one. Have I ever read a script? Yes, we did. There was one that Doug (Liman) kind of slithered over to me. I would love to make it a reality, but I just don’t know when or how. And how many Mission: Impossibles does (Tom Cruise) need? Come on. Come back to the side where you can be a…wasn’t he brilliant as the cowardly hero? Incredible. I’m so ready. I’m not the impediment, I promise.”

Will Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Actually Happen?

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any real progress on Edge of Tomorrow 2 behind the scenes, but Blunt’s enthusiasm is certainly a positive sign. Prior to her most recent comment, Blunt affirmed that she would return for Edge of Tomorrow 2 in a heartbeat, saying, “I loved the experience so much, and I would love to work with Doug (Liman) again.” For Liman’s part, he’s evidently interested in revisiting the world of the franchise as well, with a script having been completed with the proposed title of Live Die Repeat and Repeat.

Cruise himself hasn’t said too much about the prospect of a sequel, but, as Blunt suggests, his commitments to other projects may make it difficult for a follow-up to get off the ground. Cruise is still mid-production on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, but he’s also set to collaborate with Liman on a movie set in outer space. The actor’s schedule, then, is looking fairly full for at least the next few years, which may be why a recent report stated that Warner Bros. was interested in bringing an Edge of Tomorrow TV show to life instead.

Christopher McQuarrie, the Edge of Tomorrow screenwriter, Mission: Impossible director, and Cruise’s creative partner, recently stopped by the Empire Spoiler Specials podcast, talking all things Mission: Impossible 7 and revealing that he and Cruise have multiple ideas for future collaborations. McQuarrie didn’t mention an Edge of Tomorrow sequel, but did talk about an original “gnarly movie” that the duo is interested in bringing to life, which would further delay a potential sequel to the 2014 sci-fi. Unfortunately, then, Edge of Tomorrow 2 doesn’t seem like it will be happening anytime soon.
