Full House Creator Reveals First Cast of Actor in Sitcom (And It’s Not Who You Think) -TGN

Creator Jeff Franklin reveals which one Full house actor was the first to be cast. In the late ’80s, ABC put its own spin on a family sitcom with San Francisco comedy. Following the tanners, Full house was technically an ensemble series, but Franklin knew from the very beginning that he wanted one actor on the show.

Sitting down with Dave Coulier, who played Joey Gladstone on the show, Franklin reveals that Jodie Sweetin was the first actor to be cast Full house. The actor played Stephanie Tanner, Danny’s middle child. She eventually reprized the role for five seasons Full house after initially introducing the character in the original show. Franklin: The first person to be cast was Jodie Sweetin.

Coulier: So you first cast a four-year-old.

After revealing that Sweetin was the first actor to be cast, Coulier and Franklin both recalled John Stamos being frustrated by being confused on the show’s first reading. He was so angry that he almost stopped playing Uncle Jesse.

Why Jodie Sweetin was the first Full House cast member

It seemed odd that Franklin’s first casting decision was for Sweetin to play Stephanie Full house. For context, ABC held an elaborate audition process to find the show’s Michelle Tanner — a role that eventually went to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Given the popularity of all actors at the time, it would have made more sense for Franklin to have cast Stamos first, given his well-established career from General Hospital. Even Coulier is surprised that the Uncle Jesse actor wasn’t the first to board the project.

Franklin was set on Sweetin as Stephanie from the start. According to him, the performance of the then child actor will continue Valerie when she was four years old, he convinced him that she would be perfect as the mischievous and sassy middle Tanner daughter. As a result, Sweetin was one of only two Full house cast members who didn’t have to audition. The other, unsurprisingly, was Stamos for the role of Uncle Jesse.
