Heartstopper Season 2 Star Reveals His Favorite Storyline (& It Doesn’t Involve Nick Or Charlie)-TGN

Summary

  • Heartstopper season 2, debuting August 3 on Netflix, expands its focus beyond the main characters, showcasing the relationships of supporting characters, such as Elle and Tao.

  • Series star Joe Locke (Charlie) says his favorite storyline is between Elle and Tao.

  • The spotlight on the ensemble cast allows for different perspectives and keeps the main story fresh, ensuring that Heartstopper doesn’t lose momentum.

Heartstopper star Joe Locke mentions his favorite season 2 storyline, which doesn’t directly involve Charlie or Nick. New episodes of the popular young adult comedy are just around the corner as Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Locke) will head to Paris as part of a school trip. They’ll be navigating their new relationship, with Charlie having to deal with coming out. Season 2 will also see that Tao (William Gao) and Elle (Yasmin Finney) will have to work out if they can ever be more than friends.

Locke previewed Heartstopper season 2, which debuts August 3 on Netflix, while speaking to TV Insider. In an interview, which was conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Locke talks about how the upcoming episodes expand their viewpoint beyond just Charlie and Nick’s relationship. The star of the upcoming Agatha: Coven of Chaos series also mentions that the Elle and Tao story is his favorite. Read his full quote below:

I often find with adaptions, you always lose some story; whereas I feel like with our show, nothing is lost. Just lots and lots of additional space is made (in the show) for the other characters. The comics are really based only on Nick and Charlie; whereas the show, there’s a lot more space in the ensemble, which is great. This season we have so much of Tao and Elle’s relationship and Tara (Corinna Brown) and Darcy’s (Kizzy Edgell) relationship, and also Isaac gets his limelight, because Tobie (Donovan)’s an amazing actor and he deserves the limelight.

The Tao and Elle story this season, I think, is my favorite in any story of the season. I think it’s really gorgeously played out, because I think there’s this idea sometimes of Heartstopper that it just simplifies what teenage relationships are. With the Tao and Elle story, there’s a lot of chewing and fraying. Will they, won’t they, but in a different way to what’s Nick and Charlie’s relationship, which I think is great. This Heartstopper is all about showing different types of relationships.

Heartstopper Season 2’s Expanded Focus Makes It Even Better

Early reviews show that Heartstopper season 2 has a perfect score of 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Although assessments are still coming in, critics praise the romantic drama for being a successful evolution of the hit adaptation from creator Alice Oseman. A big part of that is the readiness to highlight more of the ensemble, which is a vital step in the progress of any teen drama.

So often in the genre, the main protagonists aren’t the ones that audiences end up identifying with. Shining a light on supporting characters, including Elle, Tao, and the rest of the friend group, gives Heartstopper‘s audience room to appreciate different perspectives. It also has the added benefit of keeping Nick and Charlie, helping to ensure that their story doesn’t run out of steam too early.

Given that Heartstopper season 3 has been confirmed by Netflix, the response and direction the story takes bodes well for its future. It underlines that the Netflix adaptation is building on the foundation set by its debut episodes, giving those who followed a richer and more inclusive representation of what it means to be young and in love.
