Heartstopper Season 3 Gets Promising Script Update From Creator-TGN

Summary

  • Heartstopper season 3 is already being written by creator Alice Oseman despite season 2 just premiering, ensuring a shorter wait between seasons.

  • The renewal for season 3 was guaranteed alongside season 2 due to the strong debut of the YA series, suggesting a continuation for a number of years.

  • Heartstopper season 3 is expected to cover events from volume 4 of Oseman’s comics, bringing the cast into a new school year in the fall.

Despite season 2 only just premiering, Heartstopper season 3 gets a promising script update from creator Alice Oseman. The Netflix coming-of-age romance series is based on Oseman’s webcomic, which explores the blossoming relationship between Truham Grammar School students Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) and Nick Nelson (Kit Connor), as well as the lives of all their friends. Heartstopper debuted to acclaim from critics and audiences in 2022, leading to a renewal from Netflix two months after the first season’s release.

Shortly after season 2 premiered on Netflix, Oseman revealed to The Hollywood Reporter the current status of Heartstopper season 3. Oseman doesn’t seem to be a part of the Writers Guild of America, which is currently on strike, so the creator revealed that she has already begun work on writing season 3. Check out Oseman’s full response below:

Well, we’ve started writing. I say we; I’ve started writing… I work with Patrick Walters, who is an exec producer, and also Lauren James, who is kind of an editor and someone I bounce ideas off of. But it is me doing the actual writing and I have started writing season three. It’s a busy time right now — very, very intense. We want to get season three made so there’s not a big, long wait in between the seasons.

Everything We Know About Heartstopper Season 3

While Netflix has sparked criticism for cancelling shows after only one or two seasons, Oseman’s YA series is already confirmed to be back for more. Heartstopper was renewed for season 3 alongside season 2 in May 2022 thanks to its incredibly strong debut, guaranteeing that it would be around for a number of years. As such, while season 2’s performance and reception may be under scrutiny from Netflix regarding whether Heartstopper receives a season 4, Nick and Charlie’s story will continue for at least another eight episodes.

Meanwhile, Oseman’s comics provide some hints about what Heartstopper season 3’s story will be about. Heartstopper has covered the comic’s first three volumes, with season 2 focusing primarily on bringing volume 3 to the screen. Therefore, it is likely that season 3 will begin to cover events from volume 4, the most recently published graphic novel of the series that brought the cast into a new school year in the fall.

With Heartstopper season 2 receiving immense acclaim, there’s bound to be excitement over the news that writing for season 3 has already begun. The gap between seasons 1 and 2 only lasted just over a year, and it is clear by Oseman’s comments that the creative team hopes to achieve a similar turnaround. Assuming the ongoing actors and writers strikes don’t heavily impact production, Heartstopper season 3 could arrive in late 2024.
