Hijack Season 2 Chances Addressed By Co-Creator: “Never Say Never”-TGN

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for the Hijack finale.

Summary

  • Co-creator of Hijack Jim Field Smith expresses optimism about the possibility of a season 2, praising Idris Elba’s compelling performance and expressing interest in seeing his character in different situations.

  • Hijack season 2 could allow for more exploration of the protagonist’s character and the addition of a new supporting cast.

  • Apple TV+ has a track record of renewing shows that generate buzz, and despite no ratings data yet, Hijack seems to be receiving positive attention, even gaining the endorsement of Stephen King.

Hijack‘s co-creator weighs in on the possibility of the Apple TV+ series returning, striking an optimistic tone. After seven very stressful episodes, in which Idris Elba character Sam Nelson found himself aboard a passenger flight that was taken hostage, the action-thriller series tied up its major lingering threads. But even before Hijack wrapped, there were already questions about whether the story could continue in a different format.

In an interview with TV Insider, co-creator and executive producer Jim Field Smith talked about the possibility of Hijack season 2 and expressed interest in the idea. Smith, who created the thriller with George Kay, stressed to “never say never on anything.” He also praised Elba’s performance, calling Sam Nelson compelling and saying that he’d like to see Sam in different situations. Read his quote below:

Oh, never say never on anything. I think Sam as a character is really compelling, I think the way Idris portrays him is really compelling, and I think it would always be interesting to see how he would react in other situations, of course.

We’re just waiting to see how people react to this season. It’s been amazing hearing the response to the show, and we spent the best part of two years making the show, and we’ve literally only just finished making it. It’s pretty much right up to the moment it’s gone out. So right now we’re just sort of enjoying seeing how the world’s reacting to it.

Can Hijack Even Plausibly Return For Season 2?

The otherwise busy Hijack season 1 finale doesn’t leave many lingering threads, except whether Sam gets back together with his estranged wife. This was alluded to by Elba himself. The veteran actor, also known for his performances on The Wire and Luther, said that because Sam is just a negotiator, it would strain credulity for him to be in yet another life-altering crisis.

The solution could be for Sam to embrace the role of a negotiator or a fixer in crisis situations. Throughout the seven episodes, little is known about the character and what drives him. A potential second installment of Hijack could dive right into the aspects, examining its protagonist more closely. There’s intrigue, as well, in welcoming a new supporting cast.

Apple TV+ has generally been willing to renew any of its originals that receive positive buzz. By the same token, it has also recently canceled several dramas and comedies that failed to make an impact. Fortunately, and even with the absence of any ratings data so far, Elba’s latest starring role seems to belong in the latter category. Hijack even received the endorsement of legendary author Stephen King.
