Summary

  • Holes has remained beloved over the years due to its imaginative and intelligent family-friendly entertainment that combines various genres and perfectly captures the essence of its source material.

  • Nostalgia plays a significant role in the lasting love for Holes, as the film’s style, aesthetics, and soundtrack reflect the early 2000s, invoking a strong sense of nostalgia for fans who grew up during that time period.

  • The film’s strong cast, including Shia LaBeouf and Khleo Thomas, also contributes to its enduring appeal, and the reunion event showcased the continued bond among the actors.

Twenty years later, Holes stars Shia LaBeouf and Khleo Thomas reunite at a cast reunion. Released in 2003, the movie mainly follows the heartfelt relationship between Stanley (played by LaBeouf), who is falsely accused of stealing a pair of sneakers and sent to a juvenile detention camp, and his fellow inmate Zero (played by Thomas), as they dig holes under the pretense of punishment, though they are unknowingly searching for buried treasure. Other than LaBeouf who was known at the time for Even Stevens, the star-studded Holes cast also included Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, Patricia Arquette, and Tim Blake Nelson.

Now, 20 years after the film’s release, Shia LaBeouf and Khleo Thomas reunited, embraced, and shared a sweet discussion at a Holes reunion event, along with several other members of the cast. Watch a video of the reunion below:

Shared by Khleo Thomas, who is now an online influencer and gamer, the video also features appearances from Byron Cotton, who played Armpit, and Miguel Castro, who played Magnet. Jon Voight even makes a surprise appearance at the reunion. Later, a panel discussion was held with director Andy Davis and writer Louis Sachar followed by a screening of the movie.

Why Holes Has Lived On

As evidenced by the number of fans who showed up to the reunion event, Holes has lived on and remained popular for years after its release. First and foremost, it’s accomplished this by simply being imaginative and intelligent family-friendly entertainment that blends elements of Western, comedy, adventure, mystery, and coming-of-age. Holes perfectly captures the essence of its source material, the beloved children’s book by Louis Sachar, who also adapted it to the screen faithfully. This, in combination with its strong cast, is why Holes has had enduring appeal over the years.

There is also a strong element of nostalgia involved in the lasting love for Holes. The film was released during the early 2000s and its style, aesthetics, and soundtrack are highly reflective of that time period. For those who grew up during this time, seeing the film’s young cast and coming-of-age themes can invoke a strong sense of nostalgia for fans. This is why Disney may be developing a Holes TV show reboot which, during a recent interview for the film’s 20th anniversary, producer Mike Medavoy said has been discussed.
