How Tarantino’s Barbie Movie Screening Was A Stealth Tribute To Its OUATIH Star Margot Robbie -TGN

Resume

  • Quentin Tarantino’s attendance at a Barbie movie screening pays homage to Margot Robbie’s Sharon Tate in his own movie, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood.

  • Tarantino took part in a “Barbenheimer” double movie, watched Oppenheimer, then bought tickets for Barbie at the same theater where Tate attends a movie in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

  • While Once Upon A Time in Hollywood received critical acclaim, some criticized its portrayal of female characters. In Barbie, Robbie takes center stage and delivers a standout performance that adds depth and reach to the iconic doll.

Quentin Tarantino’s recent presence of a Barbie movie screening serves as a stealth tribute to Margot Robbie’s Sharon Tate in his own movie, Once upon a time in Hollywood. Directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie sees Robbie take on the role of the iconic Mattel doll. The film was released last week to positive reviews and a strong showing at the box office as part of the larger “Barbenheimer“phenomenon, with that of Christopher Nolan Oppenheimer bow on the same day.

Following the release of Barbie And Oppenheimer, Variety reports that Tarantino has participated in his own Barbenheimer double feature in the films opening weekend.

As seen in a tweet, mentioned above, from The video archives podcastthe filmmaker’s venture with co-host Roger Avery, Tarantino watched Oppenheimer and then traveled across the street to buy tickets for Barbie at the Regency Bruin Theatre, the same theater where Robbie’s Tate attends a screening The demolition crew in Once upon a time in Hollywood.

Barbie vs. OUATIH: Which is Margot Robbie’s better movie?

Once upon a time in Hollywood received rave reviews upon release in 2019. The film follows actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and stuntman Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) in 1969 Hollywood, where the fictional couple’s story intersects with Tate’s. The film presents a fairytale version of Tate, with the actor avoiding the horrific fate she suffers in real life.

While the film received critical acclaim, Tarantino’s latest film also received some criticism for its female characters, most notably Tate. Robbie’s Tate is quite one-dimensional in the movie and doesn’t get much screen time, and while this was clearly part of Tarantino’s vision, it ultimately held the movie back for some viewers. In Barbieon the other hand, Robbie gets the lead role.

Reviews for Barbie have been strong so far, with Robbie’s performance in particular being praised. The actor brings the Mattel doll to life to both hilarious and emotional effect, allowing him to show off much more range as an actor. While Once upon a time in Hollywood is widely regarded as a particularly strong Tarantino film, Barbie Robbie ends up using Robbie more effectively and relying entirely on her performance to be successful.
