“IF——ng Hate This Shot!”: Foundation Creator Shares Hard Thoughts On One Of The Show’s Subtle VFX Tricks -TGN

Resume

  • Foundation co-creator David S. Goyer expresses distaste for a particular VFX shot on the show, citing problems with its execution and defying physics.

  • Despite the shortcomings of that particular shot, Foundation still shows impressive visuals, including space travel, world building, and unique creatures.

  • While some viewers may not have noticed the issues Goyer mentioned, Foundation’s overall special effects remain impressive and will likely continue to evolve in future seasons.

Foundation co-creator David S. Goyer shares his thoughts on one of the show’s subtle VFX tricks. The series, based on Isaac Asimov’s collection of novels, will premiere on Apple TV+ in 2021. Amid the fall of the Galactic Empire, a series of colonized planets scattered across the Milky Way, Foundation follows a group of people determined to save humanity. Throughout its first two seasons, the show was praised for its visuals, along with the performances from the cast, including Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Lou Llobell, Leah Harvey, Terrence Mann, and more.

In gang crew‘s recent video Goyer and VFX Supervisor Chris MacLean discuss various moments from Foundation. When it came to the scene of Gaal Dornick (Llobell) landing on Synnax and throwing a pop-up canoe into the water, Goyer says: “I hate this shot!He reveals that due to time and money, the scene wasn’t shot as intended, and he wasn’t thrilled with the outcome. Read Goyer’s comments on that Foundation VFX trick below:

David S. Goyer: Look, I’ve heard you talk about this. I hate this shot, I hate this shot! No offense to the guys who did, but we ran out of time, I hate that the pipes came out of nowhere, we ran out of money here. Originally it was supposed to be three shots – who was the seller of this?

Chris MacLean: It was Spin, they did a great job.

Goyer: They did a great job, the problem was it had to be done in three shots and — look, I love Marvel movies, I have three boys, we see all the Marvel movies. But I hate it when certain shots just completely defy physics. And this one is just such a shot at physics, it kills me, it hurts my soul.

Why Foundation’s VFX are still impressive

The moment Goyer responds took place during the Foundation season 1 finale, and saw Gaal throw a cylindrical object into the water, which soon turned into a canoe jammed with oars. Despite some impressive VFX, the build may not have made much sense, because as the co-creator points out, the pipes just seemed to appear. It is also revealed that most of the water moving due to the canoe was created using effects.

General, Foundation still features other memorable visuals, and since it’s set in the future, there’s a lot to discover. Foundation‘s space travel and world building highlights some admirable VFX, and in the first episode alone audiences were introduced to huge planes and Imperial jumpships. As it progressed, the series also brought to life many unique creatures and technological equipment.

It’s worth wondering if audiences picked up on the same things Goyer did while watching it Foundation scene. Some of the issues he pointed out may not have been noticed by viewers on first viewing. Despite the canoe Foundation has a lot of impressive special effects and it will be interesting to see how the VFX of the series develops in the future.
