IMAX Tracks Down Oppenheimer’s Front Row Superfan Who Broke The Internet-TGN

Summary

  • IMAX tracks down the fan who booked the only front-row ticket to Oppenheimer in their theater and presents him with a film camera art print as a prize.

  • Oppenheimer is an explosive three-hour film that demands to be seen in IMAX for its sound mix and visually stunning sequences.

  • The limited 70mm IMAX release of Oppenheimer has become the most sought-after movie ticket of the year, selling for hundreds of dollars on resale platforms.

IMAX tracks down the Oppenheimer fan whose seat choice broke the internet. Upon Oppenheimer’s release last week, the internet has been ripe with memes about the film, including ones about the experience of watching Oppenheimer in the front row. Earlier this week, memes circulated about a viewer who bought a single front-row ticket to Oppenheimer upon its opening in the Universal CityWalk IMAX Theater in 70mm in Hollywood. Some called the person a “madman,” posting the statement alongside a screenshot of their booking the only front-row ticket, when other seats were available.

Ahead of a screening of the well-received Oppenheimer, a video shows that IMAX was able to find the man who booked this seat.

IMAX’s video begins with a reposting of one meme about this fan, who had booked seat A15 in the front row. In the video, the IMAX team waited until seat A15 arrived at the theater where they presented the man – who is apparently a “huge movie fan” – with a film camera art print. The A15 man beams as he holds his pre-Oppenheimer prize.

Why Oppenheimer Needs to Be Seen in IMAX

Over the course of its three-hour run time, Oppenheimer is an explosion of sound and light. Scenes of physics classrooms, political talks, and more are intercut with segments of abstract particles coming together or racing across the screen, seemingly representing the bomb’s creation, and these interjections are often coupled with sound. Oppenheimer would be a rock-concert-esque experience in the front row, as its audience is relentlessly confronted with visual and literal noise.

That said, Oppenheimer should be seen in IMAX. With its sound mix so well-balanced between Lugwig Göransson’s electric score, resounding bomb explosions, and eerily quiet dialogue, Oppenheimer is best experienced in the high-quality surround sound offered by many IMAX theaters. In addition, the combination of abstract, fast-paced visuals and sweeping shots with great depth make Oppenheimer demand the biggest screen possible.

As such, it is no surprise that Oppenheimer’s limited 70mm IMAX release, which is only available in roughly 25 theaters in all of North America, is now the most sought-after movie ticket of the year. According to a recent report, 70mm IMAX Oppenheimer tickets are selling for hundreds of dollars on sites like eBay and Craigslist, with one set of tickets even selling for $1,400 each. The 70mm Oppenheimer IMAX release may only be available to a small group, but the lucky few who experience that format are likely to have an even more immersive experience with Oppenheimer.
