Robert Kirkman breaks down Mark’s emotional struggle following Omni-Man’s betrayal in Invincible season 2. Mark discovered the truth about his father, leading to a violent and public confrontation at the end of Invincible’s first season. It seems season 2 will dig into the ramifications of this betrayal for Mark, his mother, and the world at large.
During Screen Rant’s San Diego Comic-Con exclusive interview with Kirkman for Invincible season 2, he discussed Mark’s journey. He broke down how Mark will deal with his father’s betrayal and how it will impact his identity as Invincible. Kirkman also teased more to come for all the characters, including new problems beyond Omni-Man. Check out Kirkman’s full quote below:
I will say that season 1 was a season where Mark Grayson, Invincible, wanted to be his father. Season 2 is a season where he is worried that he might be. Season 1 ends on a downer, a bit of a downer. Things have changed. The world saw this massive fight. Omni-Man is gone and Invincible’s life is shattered. Season two picks up pretty much right from there. The relationship between Mark Grayson and Debbie Grayson, his mother, is very different, they’re alone.
They’re both dealing with the pain of these events in different ways as a husband, as a son, and seeing how their relationship is going to evolve is something that we explore in season 2. Also, there’s a huge cast of characters, and there’s more and more things hitting these characters as we get deeper and deeper into the season. They almost don’t really have time to process everything that’s happened with Omni-Man before other problems are arising. It’s really dense. It’s really fun storytelling, and it’s going to be a cool season.
How Invincible Season 2 Can Be Mark’s Most Personal Yet
In the first season of Invincible, Mark began his journey as a hero, excitedly gaining and learning about his powers. Season 2 of Invincible, it seems, will in many ways be his crucible as he must face the betrayal of his greatest hero, his father. Discovering that everything he thought he knew has been a lie is an incredibly difficult truth to discover, especially as he watches his mother struggle with it as well. How this will impact his reputation as Invincible will be interesting because of how public the fight was.

Invincible season 2 can set Mark on a new path as a hero. He’ll need to mature and figure out who he is beyond his father’s shadow. By picking up immediately after the events of Invincible season 1, the show can dig into the immediate aftermath and how Mark deals with not only his pain but also how he moves past it.
The dichotomy of season 1 with Mark wanting to be like his father versus season 2 with him fearing he is like his father shows the vastly different place Invincible is in. Because Invincible explores many of the classic superhero tropes, but with a more mature mindset, it opens the door to more thoroughly examine the trauma that a hero faces. Invincible season 2 can show how Mark deals with this betrayal and trauma in every aspect of his life while still needing to step up and be a hero as new threats appear on the horizon.
