Invincible season 2 will have a different multiverse story, according to creator Robert Kirkman. Returning to Prime Video on November 3 after a long absence, the superhero animated show will pick up from where the previous season left off in terms of examining the fractured relationship between Mark/Invincible (Steven Yeun) and his father Nolan/Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). Since the events of Invincible season 1’s finale, the upcoming episodes will also introduce a villain with multiversal abilities that will cause trouble for the titular superhero.

Kirkman, who also wrote the comics on which Invincible is based, told IGN that the multiverse of Invincible season 2 will be different thanks to new villain Angstrom Levy (voiced by Sterling K. Brown). The multiverse idea comes into play due to Levy’s powers, but unlike other properties, the concept will not be leaned on too heavily. Read Kirkman’s full quote below:

“I think if Angstrom Levy’s the backbone villain, I think that that’s his core story. I don’t think that we lean on it too heavily, and I also want to stress that we’re exploring the multiverse in a much different way. I think that there’s no end of movies and TV shows that are exploring that right now. We have a slightly different angle on it that I think makes it fresh and new, but yeah, it’s a big part of who his character is. His natural superpower is that he can access other dimensions, and so we’re following him on his journey as he tries to utilize that power in certain ways that over time possibly get corrupted. So yeah, we’re following him on this journey and seeing where things lead, and that puts him on a collision course with Invincible in the worst possible way.”

Angstrom Levy Could Take Invincible To New Heights

In the Invincible comics, Levy can open up alternate realities that soon become a nefarious curse. After kidnapping Mark Grayson’s mother and kid brother, Levy uses his powers to send Mark to an array of alternate realities. Levy reemerges with a new master plan to recruit other evil Invincibles from alternate realities and use them to sully Mark’s image. In one sense, Levy is a dangerous foe that could rival Omni-Man, but he could also be the key to interestingly expanding the story.

In the comics, Levy sends Invincible to the Marvel Universe, where he meets Spider-Man. This crossover appears to be slyly referenced in the Invincible season 2 teaser as Mark scrolls through his phone. For a split second, it seems he has the cover of Marvel Team-Up #14 on the screen. That issue features Invincible and Spider-Man teaming up. It could only be a nod, although Invincible has also cast Josh Keaton in an undisclosed role. Keaton has voiced Spider-Man in several different titles, recently reprising his role as Spectacular Spider-Man for a cameo in Across the Spider-Verse.

Even without the tie-in to Marvel, Levy’s presence and powers should help to evolve Invincible as both a hero and for the overall show, growing beyond the family drama. The best comic book adaptations and genre shows, in general, have a memorable assortment of antagonists. Levy will hopefully just be the first of many, besides Omni-Man, to truly leave his mark.
