Lincoln Lawyer Season 2: Why Mickey Stopped Working Out Of His Car Explained By Showrunner-TGN

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Lincoln Lawyer season 2!

Summary

  • The decision to have Mickey work out of an office instead of his car in The Lincoln Lawyer season 2 was made for cinematic reasons and to provide a more diverse setting for scenes with other characters.

  • The potential for Mickey to return to working in his car in season 3 is still open, though the office was a creative solution to translating the books to a television show.

  • In season 3, if Mickey goes back to working out of his car, a new driver may need to be introduced since Izzy, his previous driver, is planning to open her own dance studio.

The Lincoln Lawyer showrunner Ted Humphrey has explained why Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) stopped working out of his car in season 2. The Lincoln Lawyer season 1 often saw Mickey working out of the back of his car while being driven around by Izzy Letts (Jazz Raycole). However, season 2 saw Mickey working on the defense of Lisa Trammell from his office most of the time.

Speaking with TV Insider, Humphrey revealed why The Lincoln Lawyer season 2 didn’t feature Mickey working in his car, substituting it for his office. Humphrey said the decision was made for “cinematic” reasons, but didn’t rule out Mickey returning to work in his car if The Lincoln Lawyer season 3 comes to fruition. Check out what Humphrey had to say below:

You need to have a place to put scenes and the inside of that car can get pretty claustrophobic after a while. Also you need a place to set scenes with the other characters so that everybody’s just not constantly on the phone with each other. Because in the books, they’re on the phone with each other a lot. We already do plenty of phone calls on the show, but you can’t do every scene as a phone call. So to some extent, the office was a creative solution to the issue of, how do you translate these books to a television show?

In terms of future seasons, could we see him in a different office space? Could we see him in no office space? And back to Lorna having a little office and him being in the car all the time? It’s all open.

Where Could Mickey Work In Lincoln Lawyer Season 3?

The Lincoln Lawyer season 2’s ending indicates Mickey will be without a driver for the foreseeable future. This is because Izzy is planning to open up a dance studio, winding down on her work with Mickey’s law firm as she gets her own business up and running. If Mickey does return to working out of his car, the series may need to introduce a new driver to take him from place to place.

Season 2, episode 10 has already set up a riveting case Mickey may need to work on as he’s going from place to place. This is because The Lincoln Lawyer season 3 will adapt Michael Connelly’s fifth book to feature Mickey, titled The Gods of Guilt. Much like the book, The Lincoln Lawyer season 3 will see Mickey trying to discover who murdered his former client Gloria Dayton.

The series’ adaptation of The Gods of Guilt was set up at the end of The Lincoln Lawyer season 2, which introduced Julian La Cosse, Mickey’s new client who says he didn’t kill Gloria. Because of how complex the case could get, Mickey might end up working out of his Lincoln once again in The Lincoln Lawyer season 3. However, it remains to be seen who The Lincoln Lawyer will feature as his driver, either Izzy or someone entirely new.
