(Mankad Controversy) Litton Das Makes Rohit Sharma-Like Decision To Recall Batsman-TGN

The second ODI between Bangladesh and New Zealand in Mirpur, on Saturday, saw the controversy of running the non-striker out (also known as Mankad dismissal) spark up once again. However, it was the decision of Bangladesh captain Litton Das to not go through with the dismissal of the batsman – as Rohit Sharma did earlier this year with Dasun Shanaka – that has been the major talking point.

Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud ran in to bowl the 4th ball of the 46th over of New Zealand’s innings when he spotted Ish Sodhi backing up too far outside the non-striker’s end and quickly hit the stumps and dislodged the bails.

The bowler appealed for the run out Marais Erasmus straight went to the TV umpire, who found Ish Sodhi out and adjudged the batter run-out.

Sodhi started walking off, but when he was near the boundary line, Bangladesh captain Litton Das had a word with the umpire and decided to withdraw the appeal and recall Sodhi back. Sodhi was seen smiling at this decision to be recalled and even hugged the bowler Hasan Mahmud.

Litton Das’ decision similar to what Rohit Sharma did with Shanaka

This decision by Litton Das is similar to the one India captain Rohit Sharma made in January this year during the ODI match between India and Sri Lanka in Guwahati. That incident was in the last over the game, with India already close to a victory as Sri Lanka needed 83 off 3 balls but Dasun Shanaka was batting on 98* and was at the non-striker’s end.

Shanaka was eager to get on striker and in his stride, fast bowler Mohammed Shami dislodged the bails to run Shanaka out at the non-striker’s end. Shanaka was out, but Rohit Sharma withdrew the appeal – he later said that the game was already won by India and Shanaka had batted well for his 98. Shanaka went on to complete his century and India won the game by 67 runs.

Regarding Ish Sodhi, he was on 17 runs when Litton Das gave him a reprieve. Sodhi made Bangladesh pay for that by smashing two more sixes. Sodhi then hurt Bangladesh more by taking a 6-wicket haul.
