Here Is Why Mitch Marsh Was Chosen As Australia’s T20 Captain-TGN

Here Is Why Mitch Marsh Was Chosen As Australia’s T20 Captain: The 2021 T20 World Cup hero, Mitch Marsh, has been announced as Australia’s new T20 captain for the upcoming three-match series against South Africa. This recognition of Marsh’s value to the Australian cricket team follows a wave of new faces joining the squad.

Australia is gearing up for the ODI World Cup with an 18-man squad. The list includes Pat Cummins, who revealed that he played the final Ashes Test with a fractured wrist. Despite requiring a six-week recovery period, Cummins is anticipated to join the South Africa tour later.

Marsh, aged 31, replaces the retired Aaron Finch as T20 captain after his spectacular return to Test cricket with an Ashes century at Headingley. The newly appointed skipper will lead a team featuring emerging talents such as Aaron Hardie and left-arm bowler Spencer Johnson. The series is set to kick off on August 31.

Several Test players including Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green, and David Warner will sit out of the T20 series. Injured spinner Ashton Agar will also be absent. However, they are expected to join the one-day leg of the tour to prepare for the World Cup.

Notably, Test star Marnus Labuschagne and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell were not included in the ODI squad. Maxwell’s absence is due to the imminent birth of his first child. This provided a golden opportunity for all-rounder Hardie and rookie spinner Tanveer Sangha to be named in both the T20 and ODI squads. Sangha will compete with established spin stars Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar for a spot in spin-friendly India.

Cummins, suffering from an “undisplaced fracture of his left radius”, remains the ODI captain. He is expected to recover in time for the World Cup. While Cummins will lead the one-day team through the World Cup in India, Marsh will helm the T20 squad for the West Indies and USA World Cup in 2024.

Marsh, known for his match-winning performance in the 2021 World Cup final against New Zealand, was picked for the captaincy over Travis Head and Alex Carey. According to George Bailey, “Mitch has long been a senior player within the white-ball structure, with this an opportunity for him to add to his leadership skills at the international level.”

The T20 squad also welcomes Big Bash player of the tournament, Matt Short, alongside Hardie and Johnson. Bailey enthused about the newcomers saying, “Aaron, Spencer, and Matt have been outstanding in the BBL and identified as potential national players of the future. This tour is a great opportunity for all three to demonstrate those skills in a national team environment.”
