Netflix does not pay residuals to South Korean actors despite massive hits like Squid Game and The Glory. In recent years, the streaming service has been expanding its library of original South Korean content with shows like Squid Game, which remains its most-watched series ever, and The Glory. Earlier this year, Netflix announced another major expansion to its slate of Korean movies and TV shows for 2023.

Now, as the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes continue in part due to low residual pay, a report from the Los Angeles Times reveals that Netflix does not pay residuals at all to South Korean actors. Song Chang-gon, an actor and current president of the Korea Broadcasting Actors Union, says Netflix refuses to meet with the union about their members receiving residuals, which is a form of royalty paid to credited talent after a show’s initial release.
