New Girl Star Uses Deep Cut Season 2 Reference To Pay Tribute To Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour-TGN

Summary

  • New Girl star Max Greenfield pays tribute to Taylor Swift’s guest appearance on the show with a friendship bracelet referencing the episode she appeared in.

  • Swift’s influence is evident in New Girl, with references to her and her music scattered throughout the series.

  • The small plot hole created by Swift’s cameo is outweighed by her impact on the show, as her music resonates with the characters’ experiences of growing up and figuring out life.

New Girl star Max Greenfield references a deep cut from season 2 while paying tribute to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. The pop phenomenon, currently on a blockbuster world tour, was a guest star on the Fox comedy in 2013. Swift starred as Elaine during the season 2 finale, in which she interrupts Cece’s (Hannah Simone) arranged wedding to Shivrang (Satya Bhabha). Elaine confesses her love for Shivrang, and the pair run off together mid-ceremony. The hilarious moment was inspired by Swift’s song “Speak Now.” The interruption, in turn, leads to Cece confessing her true feelings to Greenfield’s Schmidt.

While attending Swift’s Eras Tour stop in Los Angeles, Greenfield referenced the New Girl season 2 episode, paying tribute to the star’s cameo via friendship bracelet. Check it out below:

Based on one of Swift’s lyrics, a tour tradition has fans trading friendship bracelets at the concert. In a series of Instagram posts, Greenfield shows off his bracelets, including one that says, “Elaine’s Big Day,” referencing the name of the episode Swift guest-starred on.

How Taylor Swift Influenced New Girl

The bracelet was well-received, as there is a large overlap between Swift fans and New Girl viewers. Jess (Zooey Deschanel), the show’s lead and an outgoing, quirky teacher, is the prime example of a Swift fan and is proud of it, too. In a scene that has since become a viral meme, Jess is seen crying, a glass of wine in hand, saying, “I just wanted to listen to Taylor Swift alone.”

Swift is referenced often throughout New Girl. This includes characters describing a “Taylor Swift-like range of emotions” or referencing her high-profile move to New York City. Additionally, the aforementioned viral moment with Jess features Nick (Jake Johnson) dancing to the song “22” for a prolonged moment.

While Swift’s cameo created a small plot hole for New Girl, there is no denying her influence on the series. Like Swift’s music, each character is experiencing early adulthood, growing up, and figuring out life one step at a time. Through relationship problems, friendship trials and tribulations, and more, Swift’s music could be the perfect soundtrack for the series. While New Girl remains a fan-favorite show of the 2010s, it’s clear its stars also remember it in a very special way.
