“I’m Glad I Didn’t Blink”: Nicolas Cage Breaks Silence On The Flash’s Superman Cameo-TGN

Summary

  • Nicolas Cage opens up about his long-awaited role as Superman in The Flash, expressing his satisfaction with finally seeing the character on screen.

  • Cage reveals how he would have played Superman in his canceled film, drawing inspiration from his performance in City of Angels and emphasizing the complexity of the character.

  • Despite his brief cameo, it is significant that Cage’s Superman made it into The Flash, considering the film’s troubled production history, and fans can learn more about the scrapped film in a documentary.

Nicolas Cage finally talks about getting to play the Man of Steel in The Flash movie, more than two decades after his Superman Lives film was canceled. After having been stuck in development hell since 2014, The Flash film with Ezra Miller was officially released in theaters this year, only to become one of the DCEU’s biggest financial bombs. The Barry Allen-centric film serves as one of the final DCEU movies for Warner Bros. Discovery, as DC Studios is now working on their new DC Universe with James Gunn and Peter Safran.

The Flash, which tapped into the DC multiverse, featured multiple cameos, with the biggest surprise being Cage finally getting to play Superman after Tim Burton’s film was canceled in the late 1990s. At last, Cage has opened up about getting to suit up as Krypton’s last son in The Flash, as he spoke about it in an interview with USA Today. Despite it being a quick appearance, Cage was thrilled to finally get to see “that particular character” on the big screen, as he shared the following:

Well, I was glad I didn’t blink. For me, it was the feeling of being actualized. Even that look for that particular character, finally seeing it on screen, was satisfying. But as I said, it’s quick.

Nic Cage Reveals How He Would Have Played Superman

Even though it was a brief appearance, Cage’s Superman cameo is still significant, given that The Flash made room for a DC film that was scrapped in the long run. But to this day, many have been wondering what Cage would have done with Superman had his film actually moved forward. Fortunately, Cage expanded upon that in the same interview with USA Today, using one of his other films as a source of inspiration.

According to Cage, his version of Clark Kent would have been similar to his performance in City of Angels, as he “was already developing this alien otherness playing this angel.” Cage elaborated that his Clark “would’ve been a little more amusing” while Kal-El “(had) the sensitivity and the goodness and the vulnerability and all those feelings that were kind of angelic and also terrifying,” essentially describing the many sides that Superman has to display as both of his identities. It’s clear that Cage put a lot of thought into his version of Superman, especially as he is a massive comic book fan himself, which is why his The Flash cameo is truly a full-circle moment.

If fans want a bigger insight into Superman Lives, Cage’s movie is further explored in The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened? documentary, which goes deeply into the complicated production mess before the film was scrapped. This also serves to shed more light on the fact that, despite being only for a couple of seconds, it is still a miracle that Cage got to appear in The Flash movie as Superman from another universe. Hopefully, after showing up in The Flash, this won’t be Cage’s last time in the superhero genre.
