Resume

  • Suits is Netflix’s most-watched series for the week of June 19-25, according to new data from Nielsen.

  • During the mentioned period, 2.3 billion minutes were watched.

  • Streaming success does not equate to fair compensation for the writers and actors, highlighting a problem in the ongoing strikes.

The most watched series on Netflix right now To take, a legal drama that ended four years ago. Created and written by Aaron Korsh, To take debuted in June 2011 and originally aired on the USA Network. It started by focusing on Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), a high school dropout who never went to law school, and Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) as they successfully win and close cases while also hiding Mike’s secret. The drama ran for nine seasons and 134 episodes and also starred Rick Hoffman, Meghan Markle, Sarah Rafferty, Amanda Schull and Gina Torres.

Nielsen‘s weekly streaming rankings confirm that To take took the No. 1 spot for the week of June 19-25. Nielsen figures show that the series was viewed 2.3 billion minutes in the above period, the first full week of To take are available on Netflix. Although it should be noted that the figure of 2.3 billion is also good To takeviewership on Peacock, wherever the show is available, still marks the first time in nearly four months that a title has crossed the two billion mark in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10. The last series to do that was Netflix’s The Night Agent.

How Suits’ success is tied to Hollywood’s ongoing strikes

To take is only the latest acquired program to make a major impact on Nielsen’s streaming charts, with other dramas such as Gray’s Anatomy, NCISand the CWs All American mainstays in the charts. Other popular titles include Supernatural And Gilmore Girls. There are many theories about why older series, or at least more established shows, are doing strong. One theory is that, with the revolving door of new shows debuting every month, viewers prefer to dive into something familiar that has many episodes.

One aspect that seems unquestionable is that the success of streaming is not reflected and shared with those who made the work. The Night Agent creator Shawn Ryan confessed after making one of Netflix’s biggest hits that the success didn’t actually equate to a big financial bonus. Gray’s AnatomyEllen Pompeo of ‘s made a similar point, calling out Netflix for residues. Netflix’s streaming rankings and Top 10 lists shouldn’t just be an opportunity for streaming platforms to brag about their viewership. It should also lead to fair compensation for those involved in making the most popular shows.

That fair compensation wouldn’t just go to the top producers and cast members. It would also benefit the unknown guest actors and staff writers, many of whom rely on residual pay to get them between jobs. While it’s cool that To take is now another show getting a boost from streaming on Netflix, which should go back to the people who made the series possible.
