Cillian Murphy’s Road To Oppenheimer Explained

A leading role like the one Murphy plays in Oppenheimer is arguably long overdue, with the 47-year-old star having proven himself an exceptional actor time and time again over the last 25 years. The role that is mostly responsible for announcing him as a talent to watch is Danny Boyle’s 2002 movie 28 Days Later, in which he plays one of the survivors of a zombie-like outbreak in the UK.

Murphy’s first collaboration with Nolan comes in 2005’s Batman Begins. The actor originally, in fact, auditioned for the role of Bruce Wayne, but Nolan felt that he wasn’t quite right as the Caped Crusader, instead casting him as Scarecrow. Nolan was evidently impressed and intrigued by Murphy as an actor and, in addition to bringing him back as Scarecrow in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, cast him in Inception and Dunkirk as well.

Before, during, and after Peaky Blinders, which developed a passionate following and consistently earned strong reviews, Murphy would remain a fixture in the movie landscape, starring in 2007’s Sunshine, an underrated Boyle sci-fi flick, Anthropoid, Free Fire, and A Quiet Place Part II. Oppenheimer, however, represents one of the most compelling actor and director pairings in recent memory, and the film likely wouldn’t have been as successful without him in the lead role.
