Pat Cummins Displayed A Sign Of True Captain By His Act In The 5th Ashes Test-TGN

Pat Cummins Displayed A Sign Of True Captain By His Act In The 5th Ashes Test: Pat Cummins, the Australian captain, suffered a wrist injury during the fifth Ashes Test against England. Notably, he was seen with a bandage on his left wrist after the game. Later, he admitted that the results of scans were awaited to understand the injury’s nature. Unfortunately, the severity of the injury remains uncertain.

The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that Cummins may have played with a broken wrist. Two unnamed sources have corroborated this claim, citing information from medical staff. The injury appeared more serious than initially assessed. Moreover, Cummins seemed to bowl without any major issue but showed discomfort while batting.

During the match, he made an impressive 36 runs off 86 balls. This achievement is praiseworthy considering his injury. Nevertheless, his injury now casts doubt over his participation in Australia’s upcoming limited overs games. Cummins shared his experience, saying, “I landed on my wrist on day one in the field going for a run out. It’s pretty sore.”

Besides Cummins, other players like Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc sustained injuries as well. Lyon was ruled out due to a calf injury, while Starc battled a shoulder issue. The tightly packed schedule of five Ashes Tests in 46 days might have contributed to these injuries. Moreover, Australia played the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India just before the Ashes.

British journalist Nick Hoult has blamed “greed” for the crammed schedule. Cricket administrators seemed eager to fit in white-ball cricket before and after the Ashes. Additionally, England’s domestic competition The Hundred and India’s IPL also affected the scheduling. Both Cummins and Starc are now facing injury concerns ahead of important matches for Australia.

The Aussies are keen that neither injury is severe, especially with the upcoming South African tour. The squad’s announcement is expected next week, and most multi-format players may be rested for the Twenty20 series. Then, it’s hoped that Cummins, Starc, and other prominent players will return for the five one-day internationals (ODIs). These ODIs are crucial for the ODI World Cup in India.

Starc’s fitness is particularly significant as he has been Australia’s top wicket-taker in the last two World Cups. Meanwhile, players like Tanveer Sangha and Aaron Hardie are emerging as potential selections for the 50-over tournament. Marnus Labuschagne, however, seems to be struggling for his spot, averaging 25 in 17 games.

The injuries sustained by key Australian players, including Cummins, raise concerns for the team’s future performances. The packed schedule and increased demands of modern cricket might be causing these health issues. Australia’s cricket management must carefully consider players’ fitness and well-being, especially with significant tournaments on the horizon.
