The Super Mario Bros. movie has changed Princess Peach

Part of what helped to make The Super Mario Bros. movie so successful is updating Princess Peach’s character for modern times. In many early games, she is little more than a damsel in distress waiting for Mario to come rescue her. In The Super Mario Bros. movie, Peach is much more proactive, making her a considerably more interesting character. It doesn’t hurt that she can benefit from the Fire Flower.

As the leader of the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach must be an exceptionally powerful monarch with a heart of steel. Her people are mostly fun-loving toads with little power to actually defend themselves. Because of their weakness, the Peach of The Super Mario Bros. movie has evolved into a powerful biker with nerves of steel and an unwavering personality. Her performance is in stark contrast to the previous one SuperMario games, where she often plays the damsel in distress.

Luigi takes over the role of damsel. It’s an excellent and timely update as the damsel trope would have limited one of the few women The Super Mario Bros. movie playing a passive role throughout the film. Having a more active Princess Peach allows for better representation of women and girls while also providing a fresh and interesting take on the character. It’s one of the few changes The Super Mario Bros. movie made, and it’s brilliant.
