Riverdale‘s series finale synopsis reveals an elderly Betty in the present day. The long-running CW series returned for its seventh installment and has been focused on signing off with its signature brand of wild plot developments. All the key characters, including Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica, have been sent back to the 1950s. But based on the preview of the show’s last-ever episode, it sounds like Riverdale season 7 will close out by going back to the main timeline in a very sentimental way.

TVLine confirms that The CW has shared a synopsis for the Riverdale series finale, which is titled “Goodbye, Riverdale” and which debuts on Wednesday, August 23. In the preview for the episode, which is written by showrunner and executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, it’s teased that viewers will see an 86-year-old Betty in the present day. Check out the synopsis below:

Back in present day and longing for her former life in Riverdale, 86-year-old Betty turns to a special friend to help her relive her last day of senior year with her friends as they were, their memories restored.

The Riverdale Finale Promises Nostalgia (In More Ways Than One)

Riverdale season 7 made a relatively bold decision not to spend its final season with the characters as they are, instead sending them on one last mysterious detour that needs to be unfurled and decoded. The benefit of that is, with a promised return to the main story of Riverdale, there will be a feeling of nostalgia in getting to experience the teen drama in what was arguably a strong storytelling stretch.

As images and sneak previews of the Riverdale season 7 finale are unveiled, it will also be a call to lapsed viewers that might have lost touch with the CW show through its various changes. A series finale for a long-running saga like Riverdale should not only be concerned with addressing the final season, but also acknowledging what the core of the premise was at one point. The elderly Betty plot allows for that, taking the characters back to the pivotal high school setting.

As a bonus, the Riverdale finale also evokes a sense of nostalgia in the viewer. The rewind to a simpler time might bring back similar memories for those watching, which paints the show in a potentially more favorable light. Over the course of its run, the CW soap opera has had plenty of ups and downs, but by relying on the power of memory, it has the chance to sign off strong.
