Secret Invasion Director Was Given 1 Rhodey Requirement To Set Up Armor Wars-TGN

Summary

  • Secret Invasion director Ali Selim reveals that Marvel gave him requirements for the next movie, including putting Nick Fury in space and ensuring that Rhodey’s legs don’t work for Armor Wars.

  • If Rhodey was replaced by a Skrull after Captain America: Civil War, he may be unaware of subsequent events like Tony Stark’s death. This sets up a unique arc for Rhodey in Armor Wars where he has to find his place in a world that has faced major challenges.

  • Armor Wars may see Rhodey stepping out of Tony Stark’s shadow and being distrustful of the government’s use of Stark Technology. His future in the series will require him to relearn how to exist in this new iteration of the MCU.

Secret Invasion director Ali Selim reveals the requirement he was given to set up Rhodey’s future in Armor Wars. The Secret Invasion finale was chock-full of shocking revelations, including James “Rhodey” Rhodes’ rescue after being held for an extended period of time. Secret Invasion showed that Rhodey had been replaced by a Skrull at some point during the MCU. Although it hasn’t been revealed when exactly he was replaced, his inability to walk in the finale seems to point to some time around or after Captain America: Civil War.

In an exclusive interview with Selim, Screen Rant spoke with the director about the Secret Invasion finale. He revealed that Marvel gave him certain directives to set up the future, including where Nick Fury needs to be. He also explained what he needed to do to set up Rhodey’s future in Armor Wars. Check out Selim’s full quote and interview below:

Ali Salim: I was given some requirements for the next movie. You have to put Nick Fury up in space. For the next beat, you have to make sure that Rhodey’s legs don’t work for Armor Wars.

How The Finale Of Secret Invasion Could Set Up Armor Wars

If Rhodey was replaced by a Skrull after being injured in Captain America: Civil War, this could mean that he is unaware of the events following this in the MCU, including the death of his best friend Tony Stark. The Armor Wars comic book series follows Tony Stark as he struggles to keep his technology out of the wrong hands, and many have speculated that Rhodey will have a similar journey in the movie as a way to honor his friend’s legacy. However, it seems this might be deeper than that, especially if Rhodey has to try and find his footing in the world and grieve the sudden death of one of his closest friends.

Rhodey has been a hero in the MCU for a long time, but he hasn’t been fully fleshed out, mostly acting as Tony’s close friend and ally throughout the Infinity Saga. Secret Invasion sets up a truly unique arc for the military man now that Rhodey has been held hostage by the Skrull for years. Rhodey will have to adjust to a world that faced Thanos, the Blip, Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff’s deaths, and a Skrull invasion.

Armor Wars could see Rhodey step outside Tony’s shadow to find himself in this new world. Secret Invasion set up a massive infiltration into the U.S. Government, and Rhodey may be distrustful of them using Stark Technology and weaponry — especially when they are unable to notice that he has been replaced. Secret Invasion set up a lot of interesting future arcs with Fury, Ross, G’iah, and Falsworth, but Rhodey’s future in Armor Wars may be the most interesting, with a character having to relearn how to exist in this new iteration of the MCU.
