The sequel to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is officially removed from Sony’s release date calendar, with a new date to be determined. Beyond the Spider-Verse will be the third entry in Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Verse series, and will continue on from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s cliffhanger ending. It’s a highly anticipated release, but no longer has a date.

Sony announced a number of changes to their Marvel movie release calendar, one of which is the removal of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse from its March 29, 2024 release date. The studio is considering a number of new release dates for Spider-Verse 3 depending on how long the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes last in Hollywood. As of now, it’s unclear when the strikes will conclude.

When Will Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Release?

It’s uncertain when Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will release now that it’s been removed from Sony’s calendar, but hopefully will open sometime in 2024. Since Across the Spider-Verse proved to be a summer box office success, so far earning $677 million worldwide, Sony could move Beyond the Spider-Verse to a summer 2024 release date. The main hindrance to that possibility is Venom 3 currently set to release in July 2024 and Kraven the Hunter in August 2024 since the studio may not want their films to overlap too much. If Sony could manage to release Spider-Verse in May or June, that might space out the movies enough.

Beyond the Spider-Verse could perhaps also move to the Holiday 2024 season, and release later on in the year either around Thanksgiving or Christmas, since it’s a popular moviegoing period. In fact, the first movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, released in December 2018, so the franchise has a history of opening at that time of year. Sony currently has November 8, 2024 staked out with no title, so Beyond the Spider-Verse could potentially movie there. However, it’s also possible Beyond the Spider-Verse may move to 2025. Between Sony and Marvel Studios, 2024 is packed with superhero movies – while Warner Bros. Discovery currently only has one, Joker: Folie à Deux – so Sony may opt to avoid the competition and stake out a date in 2025.

With that said, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are still currently ongoing, and it’s unclear when they might be resolved. As such, it may not be until that point that Sony announces Beyond the Spider-Verse’s new release date. Further, if other studios look to shuffle their release calendars, it will no doubt affect Sony’s as well, so there may be even more changes. For now, it remains to be seen where Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will land on Sony’s release calendar.
