A reveal surrounding an upcoming Star Wars book confirms that Obi-Wan Kenobi feared Luke Skywalker would succumb to the dark side during Return of the Jedi. The novel in question is titled From a Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi, and completes the trilogy of anthology novels that detail moments of the Star Wars original trilogy films from the differing point of view of various central and supporting characters. With the details being released about which stories would appear in the most recent installment, Lucasfilm has offered some interesting insights into the third film in George Lucas’ original Star Wars trilogy, some that even act as retcons.

As revealed by Star Wars Books‘ Twitter account, one of these insights outlines that Obi-Wan Kenobi feared Luke Skywalker’s turn to the dark side during Return of the Jedi. The short story set to be part of the upcoming book is aptly titled From a Certain Point of View and is written by Alex Jennings. Detailing Obi-Wan’s perspective from the scene in Return of the Jedi where he utters the titular phrase, the story is set to explore how Obi-Wan feared Luke would end up the same as his father before him:

‘So what I told you was true,’ Obi-Wan continued. ‘From a certain point of view.’

Obi-Wan sensed the struggle within Luke’s heart. Beneath a layer of calm lay a roiling sea of surging emotion. Darkness and light intertwined. Luke’s darkness surged against the light, but his better nature, while quieter, was the more powerful of the two – for now. Of course, this was not the first time Luke had struggled so. Before, it has been attachment to his friends that threatened to pull him in the wrong direction, even after Obi-Wan warned him.

Luke’s voice broke. ‘From a certain point of view?'”

Star Wars Is Finally Giving Obi-Wan’s Perspective On His Anakin Lie

This excerpt from the upcoming book finally proves that Star Wars will explore Obi-Wan’s side of the story concerning his lie about Anakin. Of course, the title and story are centering on Obi-Wan’s insistence that Anakin Skywalker had been killed by Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi from his own perspective, with Luke challenging that Obi-Wan did not tell him the truth. This has always been a contentious part of Star Wars, not only for the way Lucas retconned his decision to make Anakin Darth Vader but the way it makes Obi-Wan seem mistrustful.

Finally, though, Lucasfilm is exploring why Obi-Wan lied to Luke through From a Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi. It is clear this lie caused Obi-Wan to fear for Luke, specifically with how Luke’s anger and emotion rose upon hearing Obi-Wan’s explanation. Obi-Wan sensed Luke’s reaction to this and feared that his darker side would outweigh his light as it almost did in The Empire Strikes Back. This is a valuable story to tell, as it finally gives Obi-Wan’s side of the story from Return of the Jedi all while confirming the fear the Jedi Master held for his former Padawan.
