  • The sarlacc’s violent death at the hands of Boba Fett becomes more poignant considering its longing for companionship.

Star Wars will finally reveal the thoughts of the sarlacc pit, 40 years after Return of the Jedi. Named the Great Pit of Carkoon, the sarlacc located in Tatooine’s Dune Sea was Jabba the Hutt’s favorite way to dispose of his prisoners and those who had displeased him. However, it seems the sarlacc had its own opinions about the whole process.

Revealed on Twitter for Lucasfilm Publishing’s upcoming book Return of the Jedi: A Certain Point of View, the sarlacc will finally get its day. A collection of 40 short stories set during the events of Return of the Jedi in honor of its 40th anniversary, one of the stories from Charlies Jane Anders will be entitled “My Mouth Never Closes”, a tale from the perspective of the sarlacc itself. Here’s the newly revealed excerpt:

“People, stop tossing each other into my mouth! I’m serious, I’ve tried letting you know every way I can and you still keep doing it. Every once in a while, one of these flying machines soars over, full of these little spindly creatures with their limbs flapping around in the air. I always hope they’re here to make friends, but then their bodies just plummet into my mouth, without even trying to communicate. I’ve actually had a friend before-my people just drift alone among the stars until we find a place to burrow, as it happens- but since I’ve been here, I’ve seen all these tiny being living together, and I kind of live how it looks.”

Humorously, it looks as though the sarlacc would have preferred not to eat the countless beings unfortunate to get on Jabba the Hutt’s bad side.

Star Wars Is Making The Sarlacc’s Fate Surprisingly Tragic

Sadly, it does seem as though this upcoming story about the Great Pit of Carkoon will make its ultimate fate far more tragic than initially perceived. After being knocked into its gaping maw after his jetpack malfunctioned in Return of the Jedi, Boba Fett ended up escaping 1,000 of digestion as revealed in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. However, Boba Fett would later return to recover his armor before dropping a seismic charge straight into the sarlacc’s mouth, killing it once and for all.

Initially meant to be viewed as a victory for Boba Fett over a seemingly fearsome monster, it’s already clear from this except alone that the sarlacc was apparently lonely and just looking for some friends during Return of the Jedi. This makes its very violent and brutal death quite tragic. That said, it will be interesting to read Anders’ full story when Return of the Jedi: From a Certain Point of View comes to bookstore shelves on August 29th.
