Steve Smith and David Warner retire after the Fifth Ashes 2023 test -TGN

Steve Smith and David Warner will retire after Fifth Ashes 2023 test? Rain has the final say in the Ashes’ fourth test match in Manchester. The result? A draw that guarantees Australia to keep the prestigious urn. Still, the score won’t top 2-2 or 3-1 in Australia’s favour. As we approach the test match at the Oval that ends at the end of the series, there are many rumors of major decisions coming out of the Australian camp.

These speculations, fueled by former England captain Michael Vaughan, point to significant changes. Vaughan believes the Oval Test could spell the end for lead-off hitter David Warner. Additionally, this could be the last time we see Steve Smith playing for Australia at the venue. The revelation was made during Vaughan’s interaction with Fox Sports.

Vaughan recalls, “It’s always the case on a rainy day that the journalists get a little bored.” Adding a pinch of mystery, he continues, “The whispers were, Warner, if he’s in The Oval, it’ll probably be his last.”

Plus, the buzz doesn’t stop at Warner. Steve Smith, another crucial player for the Aussies, may also be seen on the oval, donning the Australian jersey. Vaughan muses: “There was a rather strong whisper about Steve Smith that it could also be his last time out for Australia at the Oval.”

Australia retains ashes: rumors about the future of David Warner and Steve Smith in English soil

However, he clarifies that these are just whispers and not confirmations. Vaughan admits: “I’m not sure where they got that from.” He suggests that the rain in Manchester could be the reason behind the spate of these rumours. According to Vaughan, “That was the talk of the press box yesterday, that a few Australian legends, greats, would call it a day at The Oval.”

These rumors have significantly intensified the anticipation surrounding the latest Test. David Warner has previously stated his intention to retire from Test cricket after the Sydney Test against Pakistan next year. On the other hand, Steve Smith has a few years of cricket left in him. However, this could potentially be their last test series in England.

Australia face their next Ashes away series in 2027. Given the timeline, this could very well be the last time England spectators get to watch these two titans play in their backyard. While we wait for the final test, the whispers continue to stir up the drama and add an extra layer of intrigue to an already riveting series.
