  • In a recent interview, Snyder expressed his intention to release the director’s cut of Sucker Punch, although he has not done so yet.

Zack Snyder still plans on releasing the director’s cut of one of his most polarizing movies – Sucker Punch. Released in 2011, the film follows a young woman named Babydoll who is committed to a psychiatric hospital and envisions a series of fantasy worlds where she and her fellow inmates are strong, capable warriors. Snyder is one of the most polarizing directors of modern cinema, and Sucker Punch is arguably his most polarizing work with a 22 percent critic score and 47 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, each the worst of his career.

The Snyder Cut of Justice League, which was widely considered to be an improvement over the original, has opened the door to more director’s cut opportunities for Snyder. During a recent interview with Letterboxd, the director said he still plans on releasing the Snyder cut of Sucker Punch, though he has yet to actually assemble it. He also discussed the movie’s original ending involving Babydoll, which the “studio thought was too weird,” so they had to change it. Read what Snyder shared below:

I’ve never gotten around to doing the director’s cut. I still plan to at some point. But in the original ending when Babydoll is in the chair in the basement with Blue – she’s already been lobotomized – when the cop shines the light on her, the set breaks apart and she stands up and she sings a song on stage. Yeah. She sings, “Ooh, Child, things are gonna get easier.” Blondie, and all the people that have been killed, join in and it’s the idea that in a weird way, even though she’s lobotomized, she’s kind of stuck in this infinite loop of euphoric victory. It’s weirdly not optimistic and optimistic at the same time. That’s kind of what the tone was at the end. We tested it and the studio thought it was too weird, so we changed it.

The Story Behind The Snyder Cut Of Sucker Punch

In addition to receiving negative reactions from critics and audiences alike, Sucker Punch underperformed at the box office, grossing just $89 million against its $82 million budget. The theatrical cut of Sucker Punch was toned down to a PG-13 rating, though the movie’s extended cut was included on the Blu-ray release, which added 18 minutes of additional footage and restored its originally intended R-rating. However, Snyder says the extended cut of Sucker Punch still isn’t his desired version, though there are complications over the film’s rights that may prevent him from releasing his director’s cut.

In his latest update, Snyder didn’t specify whether those rights issues have been resolved, though it sounds like they have been. Based on his comment above, it sounds like the only obstacle preventing the Snyder Cut of Sucker Punch from being released is him actually assembling it, which he plans to do at some point in the future. For now, Snyder is seemingly preoccupied with other projects, such as Rebel Moon, which is set to release December 22 on Netflix with Rebel Moon Part 2 already planned.
