A Suits Spinoff Centered On Louis Litt Was Once Discussed, Reveals Producer-TGN

Summary

  • A spin-off for Louis Litt from Suits was once considered, along with other ideas that never materialized.

  • The Louis Litt spin-off would have focused on his complex character and potentially further explored his redemption arc.

  • Given Louis’ established fan base being a Suits original character and the risk of a similar ensemble series, a spin-off centered around him is currently the best option for a Suits revival.

A Louit Litt Suits spin-off was once considered, the show’s executive producer reveals. Played by Rick Hoffman, the legal drama’s eccentric and volatile lawyer had a tumultuous relationship with Harvey and Mike. At some points, his insecurities and Jessica’s unfair treatment drove him to sabotage his own firm. Despite all the nefarious things he did, Louis always ended up redeeming himself, making him one of the most complex characters in Suits.

Given this, show creator Aaron Korsh and his team once tinkered with the possibility of launching a spin-off following Louis. This would have been the second Suits offshoot after Gina Torres’ Jessica Pearson got her own show, Pearson. Speaking with TV Line, non-writing producer Gene Klein discusses their previous plans to launch a Louis Litt offshoot, as well as other ideas that just didn’t pan out. Read his quote below:

“There were numerous ideas for spinoffs that we mostly just sort of fantasized about. Like, Aaron and I would sit around and go, ‘What about this? What about that?’” Klein shares, adding that all the scenarios involved “taking one or two of the characters and doing their own thing with them, but they just never went anywhere.”

“Obviously, there was a Louis Litt-themed one,”

“There were lesser characters who (Aaron) had spinoff ideas for, ideas that would be prequels where it’d be a younger version of, like, an ancillary character. Really interesting, fun ideas that we never took anywhere,”

What A Louis Litt Suits Spin-Off May Be About

Considering everything that happened in Suits‘ nine seasons, choosing Louis Litt as a central character for a spin-off makes sense. As an original cast member, the show’s existing fan base has already invested years in him. Doing another ensemble series with the subsequent additions such as Dulé Hill’s Alex, Katherine Heigl’s Samanta, and Amanda Schull’s Katrina risks being way too similar to the original series. Even if it ends up being great, it will likely always live in the shadow of its parent series.

Louis did a lot of reprehensible acts in Suits. He antagonized almost everyone in the firm and made life a living hell for Mike when he discovered his secret. At one point, he was even mean and rude to Donna and Rachel — two of his closest colleagues. Over time, however, he learned how to control his emotions and not take everything personally. By the end of Suits, Harvey and Donna left the company for him to spearhead. It’s uncertain if this was the idea that Klein was talking about, but the show’s finale perfectly set up this potential spin-off premise. Otherwise, it’s possible that the new show would see him also leaving New York to start a new career path elsewhere.

Given its newfound success on Netflix, there have been rumblings about whether a Suits revival can happen. At this point, it’s difficult to imagine that the proposed show will be able to bring back all the original characters, considering that everyone has their own projects that they are currently focusing on. However, if any platform wants to take advantage of the legal drama’s renaissance, trying another spin-off may be the best way forward. Louis being the center of it is currently their best option.
