Nintendo’s future plans for their franchises is good news for the possibility of The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 some time in the future. The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a massive hit for Nintendo, as the film garnered $1.357 billion worldwide during its theatrical run. As of writing, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the highest-grossing film of 2023.

Now, Comicbook.com reports that Nintendo intends to broaden their intellectual properties through film, which may be good news for The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. Nintendo cited the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie as a reason for them to continue producing media beyond just the video games their franchises originate from. Check out the full statement from Nintendo below:

By expanding Nintendo IP in areas outside the dedicated video game platform we create new opportunities for consumers to encounter Nintendo IP, and this invigorates our overall business. Based on the various effects that we have confirmed through the release of this movie, we will continue our efforts towards visual content-related initiatives,” the financial results read.

What Other Nintendo Franchises Will Get The Mario Movie Treatment?

Nintendo’s statement spells good news for both The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 as well as other Nintendo franchises that could be turned into feature films. One video game franchise that could lend itself well to cinema is The Legend of Zelda series. While The Legend of Zelda movie rumors have been debunked by Illumination, it doesn’t mean a movie based on one of its titles, like Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom, couldn’t happen in the future.

However, Nintendo has created plenty of other popular video game franchises without big-budget film adaptations that could work as theatrical movies. This includes Kirby, Metroid, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Pikmin, Star Fox, Splatoon, and Kid Icarus. With plenty of intellectual properties to choose from The Super Mario Bros. Movie may just be the first of many Nintendo series to get translated onto the big screen.

As of now, though, Nintendo hasn’t confirmed what their next theatrical release is going to be. However, The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 seems like a likely candidate given the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Nintendo’s positive partnership with Illumination. Thanks to such a successful first outing for Mario’s animated theatrical debut, The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 could be just around the corner.
