Secret Talk To Me Prequel Filmed Before A24 Movie’s Release, Directors Talk “Thick” Mythology-TGN

Summary

  • Talk to Me directors have already filmed a prequel focusing on the character Duckett and his experiences with the embalmed hand.

  • The prequel is filmed entirely through the perspective of mobile phones and social media, potentially adding to the movie’s terror.

  • If the prequel is released, it could give Talk to Me a larger backstory and establish that the franchise is willing to be more experimental in its filmmaking style.

Talk to Me directors Danny and Michael Philippou revealed they’ve already shot a prequel to their hit A24 horror movie. Talk to Me follows Mia (Sophie Wilde) and her friends using an embalmed hand to communicate with spirits. While the supernatural movie focuses on Mia and her group, the film’s opening introduces a character named Cole (Ari McCarthy) and his brother Duckett (Sunny Johnson).

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the Philippou brothers said they’ve already filmed a Talk to Me prequel focusing on Duckett and his experiences with the embalmed hand. They also revealed the Talk to Me prequel is filmed much differently than the flagship movie while teasing a possible Talk to Me 2 in the future. Check out what Danny Philippou had to say below:

We actually shot an entire Duckett prequel already. It’s told entirely through the perspective of mobile phones and social media, so maybe down the line we can release that. But also while writing the first film, you can’t help but write scenes for a second film. So there’s so many scenes. The mythology was so thick, and yeah, if A24 gave us the opportunity, we wouldn’t be able to resist. I feel like we’d jump at it.

Why A Talk To Me Prequel Would Be The Perfect Follow-Up

Talk to Me‘s opening scene featuring Duckett and Cole serves as a way to set the tone for the rest of the movie. It also underscores how the embalmed hand featured in the film has a rich history that hasn’t yet been explored. A prequel about Duckett could serve to unearth the history of the hand even more, giving Talk to Me a larger backstory that the first movie could craft on its own.

If Talk to Me‘s prequel does come to fruition, Philippou’s description seems inspired by movies, such as Searching and Missing, which tell their stories entirely through electronic communication. This could add to the movie’s terror, as audiences would be strapped in to watch Duckett’s journey through a limited lens. The way the prequel is filmed would also establish how the Talk to Me franchise isn’t limited to a single filmmaking style and is willing to be more experimental.

While Talk to Me won’t beat Barbie or Oppenheimer at the box office, it’s still earned $17.4 million off a $4.5 million budget as of writing. Because Talk to Me is a success, the Philippou brothers’ prequel project might just see the light of day sometime in the future. With plenty of interesting stories and concepts to explore, Talk to Me might be the start of a new horror movie franchise.
