New The Incredible Hulk 2 Details Reveal Bruce Banner’s Lost MCU Movie-TGN

Summary

  • Louis Leterrier revealed details regarding the unmade sequel to The Incredible Hulk.

  • Leterrier suggested the current Hulk has lost some of the anger and magic of The Incredible Hulk’s version.

  • Upcoming MCU projects may incorporate details from The Incredible Hulk 2, connecting it to the rest of the MCU and introducing new Hulk characters like Red Hulk and Red She-Hulk.

Louis Leterrier, the director of Marvel Studios’ The Incredible Hulk, has revealed new details about an unmade sequel to the MCU Phase 1 film. Released in 2008, The Incredible Hulk was a joint venture between Marvel Studios and Universal Pictures, bringing Marvel Comics’ Bruce Banner, a.k.a. the Hulk, into the emerging Marvel Cinematic Universe. Before Mark Ruffalo assumed the role of Banner in 2012’s The Avengers, Edward Norton portrayed the gamma-irradiated scientist in The Incredible Hulk, and though there were extensive plans in place, a sequel to the Phase 1 film has yet to be created.

Speaking to Comicbook.com during interviews promoting his latest film, Fast X, director Louis Leterrier unveiled new information about the never-made sequel to The Incredible Hulk in the early days of the MCU. Leterrier mentioned that there were plans for “a whole sequel,” before going on to note that The Incredible Hulk’s follow-up would have introduced several other Hulk characters to the MCU. Leterrier also suggested that the MCU’s current Hulk has lost some of the magic of the angrier version demonstrated in his film.

“Yeah there was like a whole sequel… There was like Grey Hulk, Red Hulks – there was a lot of good stuff that we were planning… Hulk is a complex character within the Marvel Universe, you want the primeval Hulk, the rage Hulk. And then when you go Grey Hulk and Smart Hulk you lose that a little bit and you get a little bit more kiddish with it.”

How The MCU Can Still Use Some Of The Incredible Hulk 2’s Details

Although Marvel Studios never went ahead with a sequel to The Incredible Hulk – most likely due to film rights issues as Universal Pictures owns the Hulk – upcoming MCU projects have been rumored to introduce some of the characters Leterrier mentioned. There has been very little connection between The Incredible Hulk and the rest of the MCU, aside from the late William Hurt’s recurring role as General Ross and Tim Roth’s return as Emil Blonsky, a.k.a. Abomination, in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. However, the MCU’s Phase 5 will change this and establish a greater link to the Phase 1 film.

Following William Hurt’s passing in 2022, Harrison Ford was cast as Thaddeus Ross for Captain America: Brave New World, which led to speculation that Ross could be following his Marvel Comics counterpart’s story in becoming the Red Hulk. Tim Blake Nelson and Liv Tyler are also reprising their The Incredible Hulk roles in Captain America: Brave New World, playing Samuel Sterns, a.k.a. the Leader, and Betty Ross, respectively. There is speculation that Betty Ross could become the Red She-Hulk in Brave New World, allowing several new Hulk characters to enter the MCU. In this way, Leterrier’s wishes for a sequel to The Incredible Hulk can finally come to fruition.
