How Last Voyage of the Demeter Could Be The Scariest Dracula Yet

While Stoker’s iconic novel has been adapted countless times throughout the years, ranging from the more gothic Bela Lugosi-led Dracula movie of 1931 to the campier comedy Renfield featuring Nicolas Cage as a Hammer-inspired take on the vampire. Across the various adaptations of the book, “The Captain’s Log” chapter has not found its way to the screen, with the majority instead keeping the story’s focus on the more human-looking form of the vampire and his relationships with Jonathan and Mina Harker and Renfield.

In shifting the focus solely toward Dracula’s journey to England and feasting on those on board, The Last Voyage of the Demeter is primed to be the scariest Dracula adaptation to date. The trailer and exclusive clip featured above indicate that the vampire will be in a bat-like form throughout the movie, making him more of an animalistic foe akin to that of the Xenomorph from the Alien franchise. The claustrophobic setting of an ocean-bound merchant ship further evokes memories of the Ridley Scott horror classic.

Director André Øvredal even has experience with claustrophobic settings in the past, having garnered critical acclaim with 2016’s The Autopsy of Jane Doe, set almost exclusively in a morgue examination room while occasionally extending to the nearby hallway and rooms. With his follow-up, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, similarly scoring large praise even as the scale was raised, Øvredal’s fresh take on the Dracula formula with The Last Voyage of the Demeter seems primed to an exciting new adaptation for horror genre fans.
