Stephen King’s The Long Walk Adaptation Gets Discouraging Update-TGN

Summary

  • The director of the planned film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk, André Øvredal, revealed that he is no longer attached to the project.

  • Previous attempts to adapt The Long Walk into a film have faced delays and issues, but the popularity of similar stories like Squid Game suggests that a different director may still take on the project.

  • While it may take some time for The Long Walk to be adapted, other Stephen King adaptations are still in the works.

A planned film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk has received a discouraging update from the film’s director, André Øvredal. The Long Walk was written by King under his pseudonym Richard Bachman, exploring a dystopian future featuring a deadly annual walking contest where one hundred teenage boys must continuously walk over four miles per hour, or they are shot. Øvredal was attached to direct a film adaptation in 2019, with The Long Walk still moving forward as of 2020.

However, speaking to CinemaBlend about his upcoming film The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Øvredal revealed that he was no longer attached to direct The Long Walk. This discouraging news puts The Long Walk‘s future up in the air. Check out what Øvredal had to say below:

Yeah, no, I love that book. I love that project. I’m not part of it anymore, which I’m very sad about, but I think in a way I was lucky to get on (The Voyage Of The Demeter) basically instead.

Will Stephen King’s The Long Walk Movie Still Happen?

Øvredal isn’t the first director to try and bring a film adaptation of The Long Walk to life. The first attempt at making The Long Walk film came from Night of the Living Dead director George A. Romero in 1988, though nothing came to fruition. In 2007, The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile director Frank Darabont was planning on making The Long Walk into a movie, though his rights to adapting the story expired before he could.

While Øvredal’s comment doesn’t mean The Long Walk is no longer in production, his detachment from the film is another in a long list of delays. However, media similar to The Long Walk like Squid Game signals the popularity of stories exploring deadly contests. This could mean that, even though Øvredal is no longer attached to The Long Walk, it could still happen under a different director.

Given The Long Walk‘s historical inability to be adapted, it could be quite some time before a film adaptation of King’s novel comes to the big screen. Despite this, King adaptations like The Boogeyman and Mr. Harrigan’s Phone come out on a near-yearly basis. While The Long Walk‘s fate may be up in the air, plenty of other King adaptations are sure to come before that will tide viewers over until then.
