The Tom Hanks-produced 2010 miniseries The Pacific is now a global Netflix hit. A companion series to the 2001 World War II miniseries Band of Brothers, The Pacific focuses on the U.S. Marine Corps’ campaign in the Pacific Theater. The large ensemble cast of the miniseries included James Badge Dale, Jon Seda, Joseph Mazzello, Rami Malek, Gary Sweet, William Sadler, and Jon Bernthal.
Netflix has now calculated their Top 10 highest performing English-language shows for the week of September 18 through September 24. After landing on the platform on September 15, the big-budget miniseries The Pacific has landed at No. 9 on the list thanks to 2.4 million viewers amassing a total of 21.5 million hours viewed. It is the only title on the entire list that isn’t from 2022 or 2023, landing among contemporary Netflix hits including One Piece season 1 and Sex Education season 4.
Why the Companion Sequel To The Pacific Won’t Be On Netflix
This newfound Netflix success couldn’t come at a better time for the franchise. A third World War II miniseries titled Masters of the Air that will follow the Air Force’s 100th Bombardment Group is currently on its way. While none of the The Pacific cast members are currently set to reprise their roles, the new ensemble is star-studded and will feature performances from actors including Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan, and Callum Turner.
Although Band of Brothers and The Pacific are both streaming on Netflix, Masters of the Air will not premiere on the same streaming platform. This is because of the complicated rights history of the franchise. Both original miniseries were created for HBO, though the company no longer seems interested in maintaining the exclusive rights to the franchise.
Band of Brothers and The Pacific are both on Netflix in addition to HBO’s streaming service Max due to a co-licensing deal that also includes HBO series such as Insecure and Ballers. However, Masters of the Air will be on a third platform as it is being developed with Apple TV+. It nevertheless retains the involvement of executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks in addition to other prominent behind-the-scenes figures.
